Korean restaurant by Seoul Botanic Park: octopus wraps at Songjjujip

In short

Songjjujip Magok is a long-standing webfoot octopus (jjukkumi) Korean restaurant on the 2nd floor of Central Tower 2 by Magoknaru Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Stopping in before Seoul Botanic Park and Magok COEX, the writer ordered the jjukkumi sarimongttang (spicy octopus with a pile of add-ins) and the snow-cheese fried rice: the octopus pieces were large and springy, and the base spice level sits at about Shin Ramyun heat, so it goes down easily with rice. The heart of Songjjujip Magok is the wrap — perilla leaf, seaweed, chives, bean sprouts, octopus, roe and sauce in one bite.

I went near Magok COEX and Seoul Botanic Park and finally had jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) again after a while!! There's a great Korean jjukkumi restaurant near Magoknaru — my nth visit to Songjjujip, a Magoknaru favorite!! Here's my review after eating spicy, rice-stealing stir-fried octopus!

Songjjujip, the go-to spot near Magoknaru for a long time now! I hadn't been in a while, but it's still just the same! So nice to see haha. And apparently if you order octopus for takeout, you get double the octopus! I should try takeout too lol. They also have a jjukkumi lunch special bibimbap, so I think a lot of people would come here for lunch near Magok COEX too.

Songjjujip Magok menu: lunch specials, meal kits and kids' dishes

Songjjujip menu board showing lunch specials like jjukkumi bibimbap

Here's the menu. They also have lunch specials like jjukkumi bibimbap and samgyeopsal (pork belly) bibimbap, so it seems like a good Magok lunch spot too. Plus they sell an uncooked jjukkumi meal kit — a Songjjujip octopus meal kit, imagine that.

Menu page with side dishes like pork cutlet and fried shrimp

If you're coming with family, they also have kids' menu items like fried shrimp or pork cutlet. There's also naengmyeon (cold noodles) and Busan-style fish cake soup. Some people were having a daytime drink — jjukkumi is already a great drinking snack, but they've got other bar-food options too haha. They've also added a Hanwoo (Korean beef) aged sirloin course — I actually saw real aging beef in a fridge.

What comes in the jjukkumi sarimongttang?

Today's order — jjukkumi sarimongttang, snow-cheese fried rice

Full table spread with the jjukkumi sarimongttang set and side dishes

This is the jjukkumi sarimongttang set. It comes with side dishes that go really well with the octopus wraps.

Grill pan with octopus flanked by pork belly and minari

Octopus with pork belly on both sides! Such a beautiful sight lol. And so much minari (water celery), love it lol. There's also cabbage, cheese rice cakes, and rice cake add-ins. It's been ages since I had jjukkumi-samgyeopsal — it's a great soju pairing and a real Korean soul-food dish, also excellent as a side with rice!

They stir-fry it right at the table for you!! The octopus was plump and huge. Loaded with minari and cabbage too, so good!!!

Fully cooked, spicy stir-fried octopus

How spicy is the base heat level?

The base spice level for Songjjujip's jjukkumi is about as hot as Shin Ramyun, so it's not stomach-hurting spicy. They cook it for you and let you know when it's ready lol. Spicy jjukkumi is just so good — the heat was just right and paired perfectly with rice. If you're looking for a Korean restaurant near Magoknaru, Songjjujip is it!! It had been a while since I had stir-fried octopus, and it was so good.

There was really so much octopus — we ordered for two and were completely full. Jjukkumi-samgyeopsal stir-fry!! Felt so good to properly eat Korean food at Magoknaru again lol.

A single piece of large, springy octopus

The octopus was really big, springy, and tender. At bad jjukkumi places, the octopus often comes in small, chopped-up pieces, barely any of it, and it's chewy — but Songjjujip's octopus was so tender and delicious. Truly a certified jjukkumi restaurant!! They say jjukkumi is in season from September to November, in fall, so maybe that's why it tasted even better lol.

Octopus wrapped in perilla leaf and seaweed

How to build the perilla-leaf octopus wrap at Songjjujip Magok

Songjjujip's recommended wrap combo is perilla leaf + seaweed + chives + bean sprouts + octopus + roe + sauce. Do it this way and it's truly the best combo ever. Add pork belly or another side ingredient on top and it's even better! The octopus-roe wrap is delicious too!!!ㅎㅎㅎ This wrap combo — you just can't stop eating it lolol.

Perilla-leaf octopus wrap with pork belly added on top

Wrapping the pork belly in too made it even more delicious. There's a reason Songjjujip has stayed a Magoknaru favorite for so long. I saw friends having daytime drinks with jjukkumi, people having weekend afternoon meals, and families dining out with kids. Since there's pork cutlet, steamed egg, and fried shrimp on the menu, it seems like a fine choice for eating out with young children too. Songjjujip near Magoknaru Station is a great spot both for a meal out and for a drink.

A bowl of rice mixed with the octopus sauce

Finishing with snow-cheese fried rice

The sauce was so tasty that even plain rice cooked in it would be great, but even though we were already so full lolol we ordered fried rice anyway because it was so good. They stir-fry it right there with vegetables and seaweed. It's snow-cheese fried rice, and the snow cheese visual was insane.

Fried rice topped generously with snow cheese

They pile the cheese on generously! The snow cheese was really delicious too, so I thought I'd have to try the cheese jjukkumi next time.

Snow-cheese fried rice with a long cheese pull

Look at that cheese pull!! Finished off with Korea's national dessert — fried rice. Songjjujip's octopus fried rice was really great too. If you're near Magoknaru or Magok COEX, come try Songjjujip for great Korean food and jjukkumi.
