Extra-large half-and-half jokbal and fried rice in Gwangju: Kkankkan

In short

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is a jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam restaurant in the Suwan district food alley of Gwangsan, Gwangju. The family ordered the signature half-and-half jokbal in extra-large (45,000 won) and flying fish roe fried rice (4,000 won), and the restaurant sent out sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) and steamed egg for free. The plain jokbal was chewy with no gamey smell and the spicy half stayed mild, so the half-and-half platter suits a family dinner well.

Today I want to share our family's trip to Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch. My family has a few go-to spots whenever we crave jokbal, and this is one of them, haha!

If you love jokbal and bossam, or you're looking for a family-friendly restaurant in the Suwan district, this might be worth checking out, haha.

Why Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch for a family dinner in Gwangju?

We were debating what to have for dinner as a family and suddenly craved jokbal after a while. Jokbal delivery is great too, but eating it fresh at the restaurant just feels warmer and tastier somehow. I'm especially sensitive to meat smell, so if jokbal has any off odor, I tend to avoid it, ㅠㅠ

Last time we ate here, the meat didn't have that strong smell, and it left a good impression on me. So we decided to come back as a family.

Where is Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch, and where do you park?

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is located at 44 Suwan-ro, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and is open daily from 12:00 to 23:30. You can park in front of the store or along the roadside lines nearby.

The restaurant sits in the Suwan district's food alley, so there are lots of other restaurants and lots of people around. Parking is a bit easier on weekdays, but Friday and Saturday evenings can get pretty crowded. If you're driving, I'd recommend giving yourself some extra time, haha.

What the inside of Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch looks like

The inside was bigger than I expected and had a decent atmosphere for a family meal, haha.

Seating area with multiple tables

There were multiple tables, so it looked fine for coming with friends or in a group too!

Clean and tidy view of the jokbal restaurant hall

It has that lively jokbal-restaurant buzz, but overall it felt well-kept and clean, so it was comfortable to sit and eat, haha.

If you're looking for a family dinner spot in the Suwan district, this vibe seemed pretty good, haha.

What the family ordered and what it cost

Here's what we ordered:

Price list for signature half-and-half jokbal and side menus
  • Signature half-and-half jokbal, extra-large — ₩45,000
  • Flying fish roe fried rice — ₩4,000

When you want both plain jokbal and spicy jokbal, the half-and-half is definitely the best option, haha. Since we were eating as a family, we went with the generous extra-large size.

After ordering, the basic side dishes came out first — salad, pickled radish, dried radish strips, lettuce wraps, and more.

They were nicely put together side dishes that pair well with jokbal. And a nice bonus here — the sundubu jjigae comes free.

They put it on the burner, and once it started boiling, they gave us an egg to add in, haha.

It was nice to have the warm soup first before the jokbal arrived, and it had a light, refreshing feel!

The steamed egg came along too, and it was soft and fluffy — good to eat alongside the jokbal.

When the basics come out like this, it just feels extra satisfying somehow, haha.

Extra-large half-and-half jokbal: any gamey smell?

Finally, today's star — the half-and-half jokbal — arrived. Seeing the glossy plain jokbal next to the spicy fire jokbal together was already a treat for the eyes.

The plain jokbal was chewy yet tender. It wasn't too dry, and the more you chewed, the more savory it got — I liked that.

Most importantly, the thing I care about most — the meat smell — wasn't strong at all. Even people sensitive to jokbal's off odor, like me, should be able to eat it without any worries.

Putting jokbal on lettuce with dried radish strips and pickled radish made a great combo, haha. It's tasty on its own, but wrapping it makes it feel even cleaner to eat.

How spicy is the spicy jokbal?

The spicy jokbal wasn't super hot, more like a pleasantly spicy level. At first bite I thought, oh, this is better than I expected — but as I kept eating, the heat crept up a bit, lol.

I'm pretty weak with spice, so eating it alongside the steamed egg in between was just right. The spice level wasn't overwhelming, so it was good to alternate with the plain jokbal, and it cut through the richness nicely too, which I was happy about.

Family drinks with jokbal as a side dish

When you've got good food to snack on, you've got to have a drink, haha. Cheers with the family, gathered together for once!

Is the flying fish roe fried rice worth adding?

Additional order of flying fish roe fried rice

The flying fish roe fried rice we added on top was the perfect pairing! A bite of spicy jokbal followed by a spoonful of fried rice cleared the palate a little, haha.

The little pops of flying fish roe were fun to chew, and it made the meal feel more filling than eating jokbal alone.

If you're coming with family, I'd recommend adding a fried rice on top of the jokbal.

Overall verdict on Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch

Full table spread with half-and-half jokbal and basics

This visit to Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch was a solid choice for a family jokbal outing.

The plain jokbal was chewy and tender, and the spicy jokbal wasn't overly hot, so the half-and-half combo worked well.

Sundubu jjigae and steamed egg next to the jokbal

The complimentary sundubu jjigae and steamed egg were also more satisfying than I expected,

and having the flying fish roe fried rice on top made it just right, haha. If you're craving jokbal or bossam in Gwangju, or looking for a family-friendly restaurant in the Suwan district, this place is worth a visit, haha.

The one drawback: parking in the Suwan food alley

If I had to name a drawback, it's that parking can be a bit tricky given the Suwan district food alley's nature. When we visited, there were already quite a few cars around, so if there's no spot in front of the store or on the nearby street, you might have to drive around a bit to find one.

Parking can get especially tight during busy times like Friday or weekend evenings, so if you're driving, I'd recommend giving yourself some extra time, haha.

Still, since the Suwan district has so many restaurants in general, this level of parking hassle was kind of expected, and since the food and basic spread were satisfying, it didn't feel like a big letdown.

One-line verdict

A hearty family dinner spot with chewy, smell-free half-and-half jokbal plus sundubu jjigae, steamed egg, and fried rice!
