Gwangju Suwan jokbal takeout discount and Starbucks coffee: Kkankkan

The famous jokbal (pork trotters) brand that's basically the number one in the country, and it's from Gwangju (kind of?)! I go both for delivery and dine-in a lot, but this time I visited the Suwan branch. Each location gives you a different free stew, so there's something fun about hunting them down hahahaha. Let me introduce Kkankkan Jjokbal, a Suwan-district favorite.

Outside Kkankkan Jjokbal in Suwan, Gwangju

Kkankkan Jjokbal, often shortened to "Kkanjok." It's so famous that basically no one in Gwangju doesn't know it, and it turns out they're a good-hearted place too, donating to various causes like Community Chest of Korea and Green Umbrella Children's Foundation. A Suwan favorite that's also this generous — of course you have to support them hahahaha.

Inside the restaurant: seating and layout

The interior had strong hanok vibes, and even though it was late, the place was packed. I guess it makes sense — chewy jokbal and bossam (boiled pork wraps) practically demand a drink haha. Also, the free side dishes here are seriously amazing haha.

Kkankkan Jjokbal menu and how to order

Ordering was done via the kiosk at each table. We debated trying the trendy new gabrisal sammi bossam, but since we'd had bossam recently, we went with the signature medium charcoal-grilled jokbal (₩42,000) instead.

What comes with the meal: sundubu jjigae and steamed egg

They bring out a generous set of basic sides first — lettuce wraps that pair perfectly with jokbal, garlic, ssamjang, salted shrimp, salad, and even dried radish strips and pickled radish! And that's not even everything.

They also give you a spicy sundubu jjigae, perfect as a drinking snack, along with a raw egg to crack in. Just completely stacked.

Spicy, silky, and so delicious — honestly isn't this just a drinking snack on its own hahaha. I could easily finish a whole bowl of rice with this alone hahaha.

They also bring out steamed egg, and it's unbelievably smooth..! Honestly rivals Japanese chawanmushi. It just slides right down with nothing in the way. With sides this solid, how could you stop by for a Suwan dinner and not end up having a drink hahahaha.

Medium charcoal-grilled jokbal, 42,000 won: how did it taste?

And now, the star of the show. Out comes the moist, tender charcoal-grilled jokbal.

The moistness is on another level.. basically a block of collagen. Tastes good and good for your skin — where else are you going to find food like this haha.

This skin — or should I call it collagen — is genuinely on another level.. absurdly delicious..! Boiled gently first, then lightly grilled over charcoal to add extra chewiness, it's insanely good, fit for a royal feast.

It's great on its own, but also great dipped in chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), and adding a bit of salted shrimp makes the umami explode!

Wrapping it up with crunchy dried radish strips and sharp garlic was so good too! The jokbal itself is so good that it's delicious no matter how you eat it, hehe.

Is dessert included? Starbucks coffee and ice cream

After eating our fill and getting ready to leave, I noticed everyone heading out was grabbing coffee, so we took a peek too.

Turns out they offer free Starbucks bean coffee — no way I could pass that up. So that's why everyone was having a coffee even though it was so late hahahahahaha. Makes total sense, of course you'd drink one haha.

Pulled ourselves a cup and sipped it as dessert. Honestly no less than drinking at an actual Starbucks — it basically is Starbucks hahahaha.

And they even have ice cream for the kids. Wow, they're thoughtful all the way down to dessert. A brand doesn't get this successful for nothing.

Takeout from Kkankkan Jjokbal: 3,000 won off

For takeout, you get a whopping ₩3,000 off, so eating comfortably at home is a great option too. Honestly I'm a frequent user of Kkanjok takeout and delivery myself haha.
