Hanwoo raw short ribs by a pine-tree courtyard: Tonguidong Gukbinkwan
In short
Tonguidong Gukbinkwan is a hanok Korean BBQ restaurant near Gyeongbokgung Station in Jongno, Seoul. After a run around the Gyeongbokgung palace wall trail, the writer and a friend ordered two servings of hanwoo (Korean beef) raw short ribs and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), grilling by a courtyard pine tree and dipping the meat in a special sujeonggwa-style egg yolk sauce. Smokeless charcoal, a generous kimchi doenjang jjigae, and gracious service made it a strong pick for family gatherings or hosting guests.

For everyone who loves great food and beautiful spaces, today I want to tell you about a Korean BBQ restaurant in Seochon, Jongno that left a real impression on me.
Tonguidong Gukbinkwan is a Gyeongbokgung-area restaurant that has earned a Blue Ribbon award for six consecutive years and has hosted many notable guests, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton. You can enjoy top-grade hanwoo (Korean beef) raw short ribs while looking out at an atmospheric hanok courtyard with a green pine tree, paired with a neat table setting, a special egg yolk sauce, and a rich doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) — a perfect spot for family gatherings or hosting guests.
- How I came to visit Tonguidong Gukbinkwan and the quiet charm of the hanok
- Top-grade hanwoo raw short ribs and a neatly prepared table setting
- The pairing of the special egg yolk sauce with a hearty kimchi doenjang jjigae
- Why I strongly recommend it for outings around Gyeongbokgung and all kinds of gatherings
A Seochon hanwoo restaurant found after running the Gyeongbokgung palace wall trail
After a satisfying run along the Gyeongbokgung palace wall trail with a friend on the weekend, we wanted proper beef and looked for a nearby restaurant. I'm fairly picky about food and tend to trust the Blue Ribbon mark, so Tonguidong Gukbinkwan — selected for six consecutive years — caught my eye in a Seochon alley.

Walking through the pretty alleys inside Sejong Village Food Street from Exit 3 of Gyeongbokgung Station, a striking hanok building came into view.

A hanok courtyard view with a standing pine tree
Inside, the interior had been freshly renovated, striking a perfect balance between traditional hanok elegance and modern cleanliness. What really caught my eye was a small but graceful green pine tree standing in the courtyard at the center of the space. Being able to enjoy the meat while admiring the pine through the window was more than enough to impress anyone looking for a great view and a good atmosphere in the middle of the city.

Two servings of hanwoo raw short ribs and a basic table setting
We ordered the restaurant's signature hanwoo raw short ribs, two servings, and doenjang jjigae for the meal. Once seated, neat basic side dishes were already set out, and after ordering the meat, a welcome salad arrived to whet our appetite. Thinly sliced lotus root and fresh vegetables came together in a mild sauce that gently settled the stomach without being too strong.

Soon, the top-grade hanwoo raw short ribs arrived with beautiful red marbling — you could tell how fresh it was just by looking at it.
The charcoal in the grill was high quality and produced almost no smoke, and the ventilation system worked excellently, so we could eat comfortably without worrying about smells clinging to our clothes. Staff grilled the meat carefully alongside peppers and green onion, which made the whole experience even more relaxed.

The taste dipped in the special egg yolk sauce
The moment I tried a well-grilled piece of hanwoo raw short rib, the juices burst out and the tender meat melted in my mouth. Dipping the meat generously into the special sauce made with fresh raw egg yolk pushed the savory richness even further. With salt, egg soy sauce, ssamjang, and fresh wasabi all on offer, I could enjoy the full value of this beef rib restaurant to my own taste.

The finishing kimchi doenjang jjigae was practically two servings' worth
The doenjang jjigae served as the meal was so generously portioned it seemed like almost two servings — I was surprised. The earthenware pot was packed with soft tofu, vegetables, and plenty of kimchi, giving it a refreshing yet spicy kimchi doenjang jjigae character that cleanly cut through the richness after the meat. It was an excellent way to finish the meal.

Why I recommend it for family gatherings and hosting guests
This place has served former U.S. President Bill Clinton along with many well-known celebrities, and it certainly delivers on both refined flavor and attentive service. With Gyeongbokgung Palace, the former presidential residence, and Seochon's charming shops and galleries all nearby, it works well as a date course or a stop after a hanbok experience. On taste, atmosphere, and hospitality, I'd give it a full five out of five stars, and I'd return with 500% certainty.
If you're looking for a refined hanwoo restaurant in Seochon, I highly recommend Tonguidong Gukbinkwan near Exit 3 of Gyeongbokgung Station. It's excellent for family gatherings, anniversaries, dinners near Gyeongbokgung Station or Gwanghwamun, or hosting someone special — you'll leave deeply satisfied.
