Jokbal and makguksu with kids in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju: Kkankkanhan
In short
Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch is a charcoal-grilled jokbal (pig's trotter) restaurant on Yongbong-taekji-ro in Buk-gu, Gwangju. Arriving for an early dinner with a child just after the dining hall opened at 16:00, the writer ordered charcoal-grilled jokbal and makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles), and steamed egg and fish cake soup came free with the meal. The chewy jokbal carries a gentle charcoal aroma, and with the tangy, spicy noodles alongside it made a filling dinner the child ate happily too.

Why Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch for jokbal in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju?
I was hunting for good restaurants in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju, and ended up at Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch. I was trying to figure out what to eat for dinner and suddenly craved jokbal (braised/grilled pig's trotters), so I looked up good spots in Yongbong-dong — and that's how I found Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch‼️
Regular boiled jokbal is great, but I'm partial to the kind with a faint charcoal aroma, so this time I ordered the charcoal-grilled jokbal. And of course you can't have jokbal without makguksu (spicy cold buckwheat noodles), so I ordered that too~
Cutting to the chase: this dinner choice was a win✨ Chewy jokbal with a subtle charcoal scent, paired with tangy-spicy makguksu — the combo was really solid :)

They have several menu items besides jokbal, but we didn't hesitate — charcoal-grilled jokbal it was‼️ The taste of the jokbal itself matters, but I personally love that extra smoky, charcoal edge, so I was excited!!
Inside Kkankkanhan Jokbal: seating for families and phone chargers
The interior was bigger than I expected. Right as you walk in, there's a register to the right and an umbrella stand to the left!

We went a bit early, but right after we sat down, people kept pouring in — and there were tons of delivery orders too,,
There's a phone charger available too :)

Just keep the hours in mind~~
What comes free: wrap vegetables, steamed egg and fish cake soup
At Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch, lettuce wraps, salted shrimp, steamed egg, and fish cake soup all came out as complimentary sides. While waiting for the jokbal, we tried the sides first!
At a jokbal restaurant, the side dishes matter almost as much as the main — being able to mix it up with the lettuce wraps was great :) A piece of jokbal dipped lightly in salted shrimp, or wrapped up in lettuce — both are delicious~ Jokbal's charm is really that you can enjoy it so many different ways :) It tastes completely different eaten plain versus wrapped, you know~~

And the steamed egg and fish cake soup came free, and honestly they were tastier than I expected,,

A bite of jokbal, a bite of makguksu, a bite of fish cake soup — perfect,,🫢

How does the charcoal-grilled jokbal taste?
Finally, our 'charcoal-grilled jokbal' arrived — and the visual alone was insane,,!!! Up close it had a glossy sheen, cut into perfect bite-sized pieces, with a faint charcoal aroma rising off it!
The appeal of charcoal-grilled jokbal really is that different aroma compared to regular jokbal. Taking a bite, I felt the chewy texture first, then the subtle charcoal scent followed~ If you like that signature chewiness of jokbal, this is an easy win for you!!!

Jokbal really has to be eaten wrapped~ This time I put jokbal on lettuce and added garlic for a wrap. Chewy jokbal plus crunchy vegetables made for a fun texture, and the sharp bite of the garlic kept me reaching for more!! I personally love wrapping jokbal like this, so I made quite a few that day💖 And since eating jokbal alone can get a bit greasy after a while, having it with vegetables made it feel much cleaner!

Is the makguksu worth ordering with the jokbal?
If you're ordering the charcoal-grilled jokbal, I'd recommend getting the makguksu too :) It was an essential part of this meal‼️ Ordering makguksu alongside jokbal makes the whole meal so much more satisfying than just eating meat!
I mixed the noodles well into the tangy-spicy sauce, then had a bite with a piece of jokbal — and yep, the combo speaks for itself,,!! The savory, chewy charcoal-grilled jokbal paired with the tangy makguksu felt like it reset my palate each time. Jokbal ➡️ makguksu ➡️ jokbal — an addictive cycle you just keep repeating hahaha

Wait, what is this visual‼️‼️ Makguksu's perfect partner is jokbal — icing on the cake~~🌈✨🌈✨
Is Kkankkanhan Jokbal a good dinner with a child?

My little Elsa was tearing into the jokbal so happily I had to share it, it was too funny haha. This little rascal finished most of the jokbal and was leisurely enjoying the fish cake soup afterward,,^^ She's a total carnivore, for the record haha
