An evening craving jokbal in Cheomdan, Gwangju

While deciding what to have for dinner in the Cheomdan area, I started craving chewy jokbal (braised pig's trotters), so I visited Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch (깐깐한족발 본점). The restaurant was clean and had a relaxing atmosphere, which made it nice for a meal. Along with jokbal, there were plenty of dishes that go well together, so it also seemed like a good place to visit with a group and have a generous feast.

It is open daily from 16:00 to 23:30.

A modern exterior and cozy seating

The neat, modern exterior of the Cheomdan branch of Kkanjok catches your eye. A large “Kkanjok” sign sits across the front of the building, so it was not hard to find from a distance. The floor-to-ceiling windows give you a glimpse inside, and the entrance area was tidily arranged, giving a comfortable first impression. In the evening especially, the soft lighting made the atmosphere look even nicer, so it seemed like a good spot in Cheomdan for a gathering or dinner.

Once inside, the whole restaurant feels warm and cozy. Wood-toned tables and chairs create a comfortable feel, while round accent decorations on the walls keep the space from looking plain. The soft ceiling and wall lighting makes it feel even warmer, and the spacing between tables was just right for an easy meal with friends or family. Seats by the floor-to-ceiling windows also look out onto the street, so the space felt open rather than cramped. 😊

There was also a large screen inside where we could watch baseball. Being able to enjoy a game while eating delicious jokbal made this an especially welcome space for sports fans. It would be great for eating and cheering with friends, and even more fun to visit during baseball season.

The complimentary spread and tablet ordering

Once you sit down, a basic spread of salad, warm stew, steamed egg, and more is brought out. The bubbling stew and fluffy steamed egg were particularly nice to snack on while waiting for the jokbal. From side dishes to warm items, it was a satisfying setup even before the meal really began.

Each table had a tablet, making it easy to look through the menu and order. The screen highlighted Kkanjok's spicy dishes and descriptions, which immediately caught my eye. There were dishes introduced by spice level, so it was fun wondering, “How spicy should we go?” while choosing. If you like spicy jokbal, you should be able to pick one that suits your taste.

Receipt-review and Chuseok discount information

They were also running a Naver receipt-review event after the meal. If you write a review, you can choose either mini spicy jokbal or flying-fish-roe rice balls as your reward. It was nice to be able to enjoy an extra side after the jokbal, so if you visit, it may be worth checking out the receipt-review event too.

For Chuseok, they were also offering a special prepaid-card discount event. Using a prepaid card gets you 10% off, making it a particularly good benefit if you plan to return in the future. It was nice to enjoy delicious jokbal while getting the Chuseok 10% discount too.

Extra-spicy jokbal with spicy seasoning

Extra-spicy jokbal with bibim makguksu

If you love spicy food, the extra-spicy jokbal is worth trying at least once. It keeps jokbal's signature chewy yet tender texture, while the spicy seasoning soaks in deeply and rushes up in your mouth. It starts out sweet and spicy, then the sharp heat gradually builds as you eat, so I think it would suit spicy-food lovers especially well. It was not simply hot for the sake of heat—the chewy jokbal and spicy seasoning worked together so well that I kept reaching for more.

Extra-spicy jokbal with a chewy texture

The bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles) we ordered with the jokbal had a spicy-tangy sauce that really woke up the appetite. The bouncy noodles were evenly coated, with sweet, sour, and spicy notes, and they paired beautifully with the jokbal's chewy texture. In particular, eating bibim makguksu alongside the extra-spicy jokbal gave the mouth a reset with its tanginess, so it was a great accompaniment.

Delivery discounts and a post-meal mini café zone

There were delivery-order discounts too, so you can enjoy Kkanjok's flavors at home. Being able to order easily for delivery and get a discount makes it seem useful on days when it is hard to visit the restaurant. When you crave jokbal, enjoy it warm at the restaurant; when you want to eat comfortably at home, trying the delivery discount could be a good option.

After finishing the meal, peppermint candies were available for dessert. They neatly cleared away the lingering jokbal flavor, and their cool, sharp mint scent made for a refreshing finish. You could feel the thoughtful touch of taking care of even a small dessert until the very end.

There was also a mini café zone in front of the restaurant where you can rest for a moment after eating. It was a small, neatly arranged space, perfect for sitting down and taking it easy after the meal. When it feels a little disappointing to leave right after enjoying jokbal, being able to linger over a cup of coffee makes it even nicer.

There was ice cream too, so after the spicy jokbal, I could cleanse my palate with cool, sweet ice cream. I was happy with the finish right to the end.
