Jeju café for parent gifts and gwajul mix: Cheongchuni Oranda

As a Jeju trip winds down, there’s always one thing I agonize over: souvenirs! I looked for Jeju gift recommendations to bring something home for my parents, and after going round and round, I ended up back at Cheongchuni Oranda 🍊 I found it myself after seeing it on Instagram, and the snacks were tasty. With gift sets that are great for parents and friends, I just couldn’t pass it up as a Dongmun Market souvenir!

Is Cheongchuni Oranda just another Instagram-famous spot?

Cheongchuni Oranda is a traditional snack shop where young people from Jeju make the treats themselves! There are two branches, at Dongmun Market and Olle Market. I usually go to the Olle Market branch, but I visited the Dongmun Market branch for the first time in a while!

It is open from 9 AM to 8 PM, so I parked at the Jeju Dongmun Market public parking lot before visiting~

It is considered one of the best places to eat in and around Jeju Dongmun Market, so even though I arrived early in the morning, the entrance was hectic with customers!

At the front of the shop, I could see piles of oranda (Korean puffed-rice confection) and gwajul (traditional fried rice snack), practically like mountains. Behind the stand, the young Jeju owner was making them himself. The nutty aroma was in the air—I simply couldn’t walk past!

For people like me, every flavor of both oranda and gwajul was available as a sample. Having bought Cheongchuni Oranda as a gift a few times, I found the gift set with four individually wrapped flavors to be just right.

Each flavor is wrapped separately, so it is easy to share. The expiry date is also printed on each package, which was reassuring.

How were the four oranda flavors?

With one bite of the yuzu oranda, its citrus fragrance filled my mouth, along with a texture that was crisp yet moist. The garlic oranda was savory without being overpowering, and pleasantly nutty, so I don’t think it would be especially divisive. With gamtae (a Korean seaweed), you might think, “Is this combination really okay?” But once you taste it, the sweet-and-salty pairing with the gamtae keeps you reaching for more, so I really recommend it. The nut flavor became more and more fragrant with every chew, making it lovely with morning coffee!

If you buy the four-flavor set as a Jeju Dongmun Market souvenir, the assortment and price do not feel burdensome for a souvenir. It is a travel gift set that will make both the giver and recipient happy!

I bought some oranda gwajul too

I had always bought only Cheongchuni Oranda sets as Jeju Dongmun Market souvenirs. This time, I also bought the gwajul that I had kept debating over—should I try it, or not?

There are four kinds—white rice, brown rice, buckwheat, and steamed rice—and since I could buy them as a mix, I chose the mixed pack.

Some were crisp and sweet, while others were nutty and mild. After tasting all four varieties, none seemed like a flavor that would divide opinions, so keep these in mind as Jeju souvenirs that are good for a gift set.

My honest take on the Cheongchuni Oranda gift set

Honestly, when I first saw Cheongchuni Oranda on social media, I had seen so many places where only the Instagram photos were pretty and the food was disappointing that I visited without high expectations!

What I really liked was the generous samples at this Jeju Dongmun Market favorite, which let me taste everything before buying! Oranda varies in firmness from shop to shop, and if you buy it without tasting, you often regret it once you get home. Being able to try it first made this a truly practical gift set!

I shared it with my family after getting home, and everyone liked that it was not overly sweet and had none of that distinctive stale, cloying aftertaste.
