Mapo restaurant for a sizzling sirloin steak set: Gyudo

In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu restaurant in Mapo, Seoul. At a family dinner for my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday, we grilled smoked sirloin gyukatsu and tried the sirloin steak set with broth pot rice. Verdict: a great pick when some diners want to grill and others want a meal ready to eat.

Introduction to Gyudo in Mapo

Finding a restaurant that suits a child’s picky palate while still satisfying the adults is honestly harder than it sounds, right? My son is 10 this year, and he is so particular that pho and Spam-and-egg sushi are about the only things he genuinely loves.

After our trip to Tokyo, though, he suddenly became obsessed with gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet), asking for it at least once every month or two, haha. At first we tried a few places around Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong, but he was pretty underwhelmed by the quality of the meat and rice.

Then I found Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch while searching around. We came back after a long time, this time combining the visit with my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday dinner, and it absolutely lived up to expectations again.

Location guide for Gyudo near Mapo Station

It is at B1-138, Obelisk APT Shopping Arcade, 33 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Sitting between Mapo Station and Gongdeok Station, it is easy to reach by public transit—and even better if you drive, since you can park for free in the building’s underground lot.

If you are looking for a place to eat out around Mapo without worrying about parking, that point alone deserves some credit. As of September 2026, the hours are 11:30–21:00, with a break from 15:00–17:00. They take a two-hour break after the lunch rush, so it is important to check your timing in advance.

A space that suits a special family meal

I wondered what it would be like since it is underground, but once you walk in, it feels like a completely different world. The interior naturally blends Japanese-inspired touches with a Korean atmosphere; it is neat but substantial, and it immediately feels upscale.

For a simple meal, this amount of space already makes the occasion feel special. It really did feel like the right choice for my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday.

Gyukatsu is the main event, with side dishes available too, and the menu itself has the kind of presence you would expect from a gyukatsu specialist.

This time, everyone in the family ordered the smoked gyukatsu (sirloin) set. It comes with pot rice and high-quality gyukatsu, and you choose salt, sauce, and wasabi according to your own taste.

The best thing about gyukatsu is deciding the doneness yourself, isn’t it? You can cook it only lightly and enjoy it tender, or take it all the way to well-done for a crisp, nutty bite—both are delicious.

The meat is so soft and tender. I love it.

Even my hard-to-please mother-in-law said that, and honestly, it is not easy to hear praise like that from her, so I was secretly pleased, haha. My son’s official verdict was that it was tastier and more tender than the chain gyukatsu he had in Tokyo. If it passes a kid’s picky palate, there really must be something to it.

The sizzling steak set: satisfaction from the first bite

Sizzling sirloin steak set
Sizzling steak with steak sauce

For the first time, I ordered Gyudo’s sizzling steak set with sirloin, and it was absolutely the best decision. The steak arrives already cooked perfectly; pour on plenty of steak sauce and take a big bite with rice... that feeling of satisfaction is honestly hard to put into words.

It is different from the feeling of eating a Western-style steak. The richer, warmer character of the meat works so well with the sauce that from now on, I think I will order only the steak set whenever I come to Gyudo.

If I had to name one downside, it is that you do not get the fun of cooking the steak yourself. But that also means it is convenient to eat right away at its best, so I think it comes down to preference.

Pot-rice broth and furikake topping

Pot-rice broth and topping options

Pot rice comes as standard with the sets, and you can have unlimited refills of cauldron rice as a side. What is even more fun is that you can choose the type of broth to pour into the pot rice.

You can choose anything from the standard katsuobushi broth to tonkotsu broth. The tonkotsu gives it a pork soup-and-rice feel, while the katsuobushi has the toasty comfort of sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). There is also furikake topping in the drawer; sprinkle it over the sungnyung and the savory, nutty flavor really comes alive.

It was my first time trying it, and it was so good. Even after finishing the rice, I found myself enjoying one more round this way.

  • The smoked gyukatsu set gives you the fun of grilling it yourself, while the sizzling steak set delivers ready-to-eat satisfaction.
  • Both picky children and adults were highly satisfied, and even the choice of pot-rice broth felt thoughtfully considered.
  • If you have gone around Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong for gyukatsu only to be disappointed, this Mapo spot is worth keeping in mind.
