Chuncheon sushi restaurant with giant pork cutlet: Raon Sushi

In short

Raon Sushi is a Japanese restaurant in Aemakgol, Chuncheon, serving sushi and pork cutlets. Today’s Sushi brought 10 pieces with thick fish and an extra-long eel nigiri, while the Raon King Pork Cutlet was hilariously basin-sized. Verdict: a thoroughly satisfying meal, from sushi to cutlet.

For days now, my husband had been singing “Sushi~ sushi~ 🍣” until my ears practically developed calluses! He was mooping around like a starving polar bear who hadn’t had sushi, so today, at last, we set out to complete our sushi mission!

Just in time, our dutiful son and daughter (?) announced they were off to a library event and vanished. A couple with a moment of freedom, acquired! But is this what kids in upper elementary school are like? They don’t want to hang out with their parents and just coolly head off, right...? I’m a little sad, but also secretly thrilled—what is this strange feeling? 🤣

Raon Sushi in Chuncheon’s Aemakgol: location and parking

Today’s target for us was Raon Sushi (라온스시), known by word of mouth as a great sushi spot in Chuncheon’s Aemakgol! It is near the National Museum of Chuncheon, so it is really easy to find, too!

Because it is in a food alley, parking in the alley can be a little tight! If there is no spot, don’t panic—just park comfortably at the public lot five minutes away. Bye-bye, parking stress~ 👋

Group seating and a wide-ranging menu

Once we stepped inside, the nicely spaced tables made it feel very pleasant and comfortable! There was also separate group seating, perfect for gatherings.

It sits right across from Seven Eleven in the middle of the Aemakgol food alley, and there were visitors of all ages: solo diners seeking a good meal, families with children, and sweet couples on dates.

Raon Sushi’s varied menu

Looking over the menu, it was variety itself—not only sushi, but sashimi, nabe (Japanese hot pot), pork cutlets, rice bowls, ramen, and chicken! At dinner, sashimi or chicken with sake or a chilled highball would be ahh... I could just tell this would make an excellent Chuncheon drinking spot 🍺✨

My husband ordered the Today’s Sushi he had been singing about, plus mini udon, while I strangely was not craving raw food that day, so I ordered the Raon Pork Cutlet! Me, ordering pork cutlet at a sushi restaurant... 😜 And the owner even gave us an adorable Double Choco Crack Cookie on the house—such an angelic detail! 🍪💖

They did not serve sushi made in advance; they started preparing everything as soon as we ordered! Even so, they were quicker with their hands than I expected, and our food came out in no time ⚡

Thick fish and extra-long eel sushi

At last, Today’s Sushi arrived! It was arranged so neatly and solemnly on a long wooden board, with 10 substantial pieces including salmon, flounder, tuna, and eel! 🍣

The fish was so thick and large—it looked incredibly appetizing. My husband’s review was that each piece melted softly in his mouth, haha. They also gave us plenty of wasabi separately, which was great for adjusting it to our tastes. Above all, both my husband and I were left open-mouthed by the overwhelming length and look of the eel sushi 😲!

The washbasin-sized Raon King Pork Cutlet

First we were stunned by the eel, then came the second huge laugh at the size of my pork cutlet, haha. Well, I suppose you do not earn a reputation for pork cutlet in Aemakgol for nothing... This king pork cutlet was practically washbasin-sized!!

It was crisp on the outside and came generously covered in a sweet, savory sauce, but the size was so unreal that I shamelessly asked my husband to eat half of it. 🤣

Instead, I polished off my beloved cabbage salad—and very efficiently cleared every last bit of my husband’s cabbage salad, too! 🥗

I felt as though I might burst, but everyone knows there is a separate stomach for dessert, right? 😉 We happily munched through the sweet, crisp chocolate cookie the owner gave us on the house and finished a very satisfying meal!

Raon Sushi had wonderfully fresh, thick fish on its sushi, and even the unexpected pork cutlet was perfect! I highly recommend it for lunch in Aemakgol, and I also strongly recommend it as a Chuncheon spot for a drink in the evening 👍
