Spicy sauce in a paper cup at Hyeonseonine, a Yongsan tteokbokki spot
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a retro-style tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant on Yongridan-gil, a 5-minute walk from Sinyongsan and Yongsan stations in Seoul. Staff describe the medium spice as slightly hotter than Shin Ramyun, so the order went to the basic flavor and the spicy sauce arrived separately in a paper cup, served with the Hyeonseoni set of skewered fish cake, water rice cake, mixed fritters and sundae (blood sausage). Arriving just off peak hours at Hyeonseonine means no wait and the full pojangmacha (street food tent) mood.

Today I'm bringing you a review of a Yongsan tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) spot that's been blowing up on social media lately, in the hip, up-and-coming Yongsan area — a place that pulls off retro vibes and standout flavor at once. I'm a huge fan of Korean street food and I go hunting for famous tteokbokki spots all over the country, and this time I visited Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, which has already built up a serious buzz near Yongsan and Sinyongsan stations. If you've got plans around Yongsan or you're figuring out a date course, definitely read to the end.

Is there a wait at Hyeonseonine Yongsan if you go off-peak?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is popular enough that waiting is basically a given on weekends or evenings, but I deliberately visited a bit outside peak hours and got in right away with no long wait. Even before stepping inside, the exterior caught my eye — a modern-yet-retro point interior that fit today's aesthetic perfectly. I'd heard it was popular, and sure enough there were waiting seats set up right at the entrance. Luckily I could walk straight in without a long wait, which put me in a good mood from the start.

Once you're in, you order right away at the kiosk directly ahead.

Inside Hyeonseonine Yongsan: pojangmacha mood and a self bar
Inside, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch felt less like the usual chaotic street-food joint and more like a stylish pojangmacha (street food tent) or a proper dining space, with a self bar off to one side offering free use of pickled radish, small plates, scissors, and tongs. Stepping inside, the space greeted me with a cozy, clean, yet pojangmacha-like atmosphere. The lighting was soft and the space well laid out, making it just as good for a gathering with friends as for a date.
My table, my responsibility! Cute and thoughtful.
The self bar was kept neat and tidy, which gave me confidence on the hygiene front too. I set out the basic side dishes and water and scanned the menu with anticipation.

This fried batter powder is the key!!!!! Definitely dip into it and try it.

Basic flavor tteokbokki with the spicy sauce in a paper cup
At Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, the medium flavor is described as slightly spicier than Shin Ramyun, so I ordered mild, and when I said I wanted just a little heat, they brought the spicy sauce in a separate paper cup. Not long after, our entire order came out all at once! The table filled up with a hearty spread and my mouth watered instantly — I could tell just from the look of it why so many people call this place a top Yongsan tteokbokki spot, even before taking a bite.

The medium flavor is said to be slightly spicier than Shin Ramyun, so we ordered mild, and for a bit of extra kick they gave us the spicy sauce separately in a paper cup — such a thoughtful touch, I was genuinely moved!!

How does Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki actually taste?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch's tteokbokki uses a red-pepper-based sauce that's spicy-sweet without being harsh, paired with chewy wheat rice cakes. Here's the star of the show, the main tteokbokki. The rice cakes were glossy, clearly soaked through with sauce — a striking sight. The sauce wasn't overly sweet, striking a spicy-sweet balance with deep umami running through it. The chewy texture of the wheat rice cakes paired perfectly with the sauce.
One bite and the sauce's flavor spread through my whole mouth — it was excellent. Rather than the capsaicin-heavy heat you find everywhere these days, this was a clean, non-harsh umami built on red pepper flakes, so I never got tired of it and could keep eating happily to the end.

The skewered fish cake and water rice cake that came with the Hyeonseoni set had that full pojangmacha vibe — you scoop them into a paper cup to eat, haha.

Top 3 mixed fritters and the best sundae at Hyeonseonine
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch's mixed fritters come as fried seaweed rolls, squid, sweet potato, and vegetable fritters, and my personal ranking was squid > seaweed roll > vegetable fritter. The mixed fritters we ordered alongside exceeded expectations too. Dipping the fritters straight into the tteokbokki's rich, thick sauce was a perfect combo. The spicy sauce soaked in through the crispy batter, giving a savory-and-spicy harmony all at once.

Among the side dishes, sundae (blood sausage) is my one pick!
If you want to enjoy genuinely delicious tteokbokki in a tidy setting, or you're planning a date or a get-together with friends near Yongsan, I highly recommend giving this Yongsan tteokbokki spot, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, a visit!
