Hongdae restaurant for a chilly day: ginseng beef gomtang, Baengni
In short
Baengni Gomtang is a Korean restaurant in an alley within a 5-minute walk of Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a chilly day the writer ordered the beef gomtang (beef bone broth soup) topped with ginseng, served with toryeom rice warmed in hot broth, plus a beef gochujang yukhoe bibimbap, and found the broth clean and mild rather than salty. Baengni Gomtang is worth remembering for a gentle, non-spicy meal or a solo lunch in Hongdae.

When you're looking for a solid meal near Hongik University Station, so many options lean spicy and heavy that sometimes clean, mild Korean food is exactly what you're craving. Gomtang (beef bone broth soup) in particular comes to mind when you want warm broth with rice, and since the weather suddenly turned chilly, I went looking for something warm and ended up here.
Let me walk you through the menu and atmosphere at Baengni Gomtang, focused on the beef gomtang and beef gochujang yukhoe bibimbap I actually tried.
Where is Baengni Gomtang? Under 5 minutes on foot from Hongik University Station
Baengni Gomtang is reachable within a 5-minute walk from Hongik University Station, so accessibility was decent. It sits in an alley just off the main road, so you follow the alley to find it.
Hongdae has so many restaurants that it can be hard to decide where to eat, but this time I wanted warm broth and a Korean meal, so I came here. If you have plans in Hongdae and want something comfortable rather than spicy, this could be worth keeping in mind.
Seating at Baengni Gomtang for solo diners and groups
Inside Baengni Gomtang, the tables weren't packed too close together, so the meal didn't feel cramped. There were seats good for eating solo as well as tables where several people could sit together.
So it seemed fine whether you're coming for a solo meal or with friends. If you're looking for a simple solo meal spot in Hongdae, this kind of seating setup should feel pretty comfortable.

The beef gomtang broth, toryeom rice and ginseng on top
One of the dishes I ordered was Baengni Gomtang's beef gomtang. For gomtang, the broth flavor matters most, and overall it wasn't heavily seasoned — the taste was clean, so it was easy to eat without feeling weighed down.

The rice isn't mixed in separately the usual way — it's served toryeom-style, warmed by pouring hot broth over it. That made it easy to eat the broth and rice together, and if you're a gomtang fan, it's a familiar style to enjoy.
Another thing that stood out was that every menu item at Baengni Gomtang comes topped with ginseng. Having ginseng on top of the gomtang gave it a slightly different feel from the gomtang I usually eat.
How was the beef gochujang yukhoe bibimbap?
I also ordered the beef gochujang yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) bibimbap. It was a good pick when you want another Korean dish alongside a soup.
It's a dish you mix in gochujang seasoning, but overall it felt more hearty and Korean-style than overly spicy or intense. It's a different kind of dish from the gomtang, so if you're visiting with company, it seemed like a good one to share.

At the time of my visit, there was also a handmade tteokgalbi review event running. The event details or whether it's still active may change, so it's worth checking with the restaurant before you go.

Is Baengni Gomtang worth a visit?
Baengni Gomtang is close to Hongik University Station and a comfortable place to enjoy Korean dishes like gomtang and yukhoe bibimbap. It's worth remembering, especially if you're looking for something mild and clean, or a solo dining spot.
If you're craving Korean food in Hongdae and want warm gomtang or a hearty meal, save this one and pay a visit. If you're curious about the event or hours before you go, it's more convenient to check with the restaurant first.
