Tonkatsu dinner near Amsa Station with a Han River walk after: Tonka
In short
Tonka is a tonkatsu restaurant in Gangdong, Seoul, five minutes on foot from Amsa Station Exit 4. Visiting at 7pm for two, the writer shared the signature Tonka plate (six pieces of loin, two of tenderloin) dipped alternately in yuzu salt, hot mustard and tonkatsu sauce, then walked to Han River Park for a night stroll after dinner. All seats are bar-style counter seats so solo dining is comfortable, and with only 40 servings sold per day, getting there early for dinner is a safe bet.

If you're looking for a good tonkatsu spot in Gangdong, we'd recommend Tonka, a 5-minute walk from Amsa Station Exit 4.

The signature menu, named after the restaurant itself, 'Tonka,' comes with six pieces of loin and two pieces of tenderloin together, so you can taste the texture of each cut in one sitting. The reason we'd recommend this not just as an Amsadong tonkatsu spot but as a Han River tonkatsu spot too is because of what comes after the meal.

After dinner at Tonka, walking over to Han River Park naturally turns into a date-course stroll, with the bridge lighting and reflections on the river.

2. Exterior — barely any signage

There's no main sign for the store itself, just a small secondary sign. From a distance you'd wonder if you're in the right place — the presence is that low — so you have to get close to spot the 'TONKA' lettering on the glass front to be sure you've found it. There's a standing menu board with photos of the signature dishes and a wooden bench out front, so there's a waiting area and it's comfortable to wait. Since it's tucked in an alley off the main street, we'd recommend using a map app to find it.
3. Interior — all counter seating
Open the door and the first thing you see is the long L-shaped bar counter.

Since every seat is a bar counter seat, sitting alone doesn't feel awkward at all, and there's fun in watching the owner fry right in front of you.

The wood-toned interior paired with soft lighting creates a mood like being at a tonkatsu shop in Japan, even though you're in Korea. In the evenings they also have Asahi bottled beer ready, which seems good for a light drink alongside the meal.
4. What sets this place apart

On the wall there's a notice poster that reads, 'The reddish color inside the tonkatsu doesn't mean it's undercooked.'

It explained that the myoglobin in pork can leave a reddish tint even after cooking, and alongside it was a photo of the owner cooking himself, which built trust.
How it's made
Even the resting step was done properly — resting is apparently done to maximize three things: juiciness, texture, and crispiness.
They operate by making only 40 servings total each day, made and sold out within that same day. You can watch the tonkatsu being sliced with a sashimi knife right in front of you, haha.
A one-person operation
One owner handles everything himself, from selecting the raw meat to cooking and serving — being a one-person operation, he was constantly on the move.

Partway through, the cabbage was so good we asked for more, and the owner kindly gave us a generous extra helping 😁😁

On the way out we noticed he's a UNICEF donor crew member, haha. A donating heart too 👍 There's clearly a reason this place draws so many customers and repeat visits despite having no main signage.
5. Menu and prices

The signature tonkatsu (loin + tenderloin) is ₩15,000. Sasami katsu, made entirely of tenderloin, is ₩14,000, and the special loin katsu, which comes with a selected loin cut plus tenderloin katsu, is ₩18,000 for a slightly more generous portion.
The average spend is around ₩20,000 — budget around that if you're adding a side or a drink.
6. The table setting

One set comes with fluffy white rice, miso soup with fillings, and a seasoned pepper leaf side dish.
Beside the katsu are hot mustard and yuzu salt,

and there's also tonkatsu sauce and a salad-specific sauce ready, so there's fun in dipping each cut differently. The seasoning isn't heavy and the overall setup is clean, which lets you focus on the tonkatsu's own flavor.
7. Menu breakdown
What does the loin katsu taste like?

The loin, with its fat layer attached, is crisp outside and thick inside, releasing juice with every bite.
The richness of the fat and the chew of the lean meat come through together, and pairing it with yuzu salt keeps it from feeling greasy all the way through. There's tonkatsu sauce on the side too, so you can pick by preference, haha 😄
That said, since this cut has fat attached, if you're not into a fatty texture it might be a bit hit-or-miss,

but with the zero-calorie cola and the pepper leaf side they provided, we kept eating without getting tired of it.
What's the texture of the tenderloin katsu like?
The tenderloin's cross-section shows a bright pinkish-red, which — as explained on the notice poster earlier — is a natural color from myoglobin.

The grain is so tender it gives way softly even when pressed with chopsticks — it really showed off extreme softness.

No gamey smell, just clean and light, and even a light touch of yuzu salt brings out its savoriness.
The special loin katsu, which comes with a selected loin cut and tenderloin katsu together, is known for being juicy and soft, easy to enjoy without any dryness. Sasami katsu is made entirely of tenderloin, so if you like a light, clean texture, we'd love to try it on our next visit... 😢
8. Tips for eating it best
We'd recommend trying the first piece with just a light touch of yuzu salt and no sauce, to taste the meat's own flavor first.

For the loin, pairing it with tonkatsu sauce or hot mustard and yuzu salt brings out each cut's character more clearly.

Adding the peanut sauce over the cabbage rounds off even the last piece cleanly without any greasiness.
9. Things to check before visiting
Monday is the regular closed day, and Sep 8 and 29 are also temporary closures, so please double check before visiting. It's closed Sep 24 to 25 for the Chuseok holiday.

Since only 40 servings total are sold per day, evenings can close before last order once ingredients run out.
