The day my friend and I decided to eat tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) in Yeonnam-dong! After some back and forth, we went to Eungkeum Tteokbokki. 🖤 They have more than just tteokbokki — chicken and other snack menu items too — so there's plenty of choice, and everything was satisfying for the price and portion size!

Where is Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch? On the main road by Hongik University Station Exit 3
Eungkeum Tteokbokki is in the Yeonnam-dong neighborhood. It's close to Hongik University Station Exit 3, and instead of being tucked into an alley, it sits right on the main street, so it's easy to find.
Even from a distance, the red storefront really stands out. I bet it looks even prettier once the neon lights turn on at night. haha
Folding doors and an open-air terrace feel inside Eungkeum
The entrance has folding doors, and the windows open up the same way, so it feels a bit like eating at an outdoor pojangmacha (street tent).. 🖤 The place itself is clean and pretty, so it was a nice spot for a casual lunch with a friend.
We came a bit late for a weekday lunch, so it was quieter than expected, but there were surprisingly a lot of delivery orders! You know that delivery notification sound, right, haha — it kept going off, and I figured this must already be a well-known tteokbokki spot in Yeonnam-dong.🖤
What's on the menu at Eungkeum Tteokbokki? Tteokbokki, chicken, udon and buckwheat noodles
True to its name, tteokbokki is definitely the main event! But looking at the menu, there were way more options than I expected. Ugh, this is exactly when I get decision paralysis.. lol
Beyond tteokbokki, there's chicken, gimbap (seaweed rice roll), even udon, memil (buckwheat noodles), and kimchi fried rice — a wide range of snack food, so it looked great for a group ordering a bit of everything.
Eungkeum's half-chicken set is ₩15,900, and the jumbo half-and-half mini gimbap (tuna 2, vegetable 2) is ₩7,500. We ordered the tteokbokki plus half-chicken set and added the half-and-half gimbap.
How spicy is the basic tteokbokki? Sweet enough for weak spice eaters
We ordered the most basic flavor of tteokbokki. It's listed as being about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, but it was less spicy than I expected, even for someone who can't handle heat!
These days a lot of dedicated tteokbokki restaurants make even their basic flavor pretty spicy, so I was a little worried, but Eungkeum was easy to eat without any pressure. It leans sweet rather than spicy, so I kept reaching for more. Especially paired with the crispy chicken, the sweet-and-salty combo was just right..🖤
Boneless half-chicken set: bite-sized pieces, just right for two
The chicken included in the set is a half-chicken, which is just the right amount for two, and I swapped mine for boneless for an extra ₩2,000.
Instead of the usual big chicken pieces, it came in small bite-sized pieces, which made it easy to alternate between chicken and tteokbokki.
Best of all, the batter was seriously crispy! Maybe because the pieces are small, everything was crunchy throughout, and I kept popping pieces one after another like a snack. The one small downside — the meat felt a little sparse..? Still, eating tteokbokki alone can leave you wanting more, but having chicken alongside made it much more filling, so it worked fine as a lunch.
Jumbo mini gimbap at Eungkeum: packed full of tuna
Then there's the mini gimbap we added on — when it arrived, I was surprised at how much bigger it was than expected lol. You can definitely see why it's called 'jumbo' in the name.. haha 🤣🤣
The rolls were plump enough that it was a little awkward to fit a whole piece in one bite, but flip that around and it just means it's that generously stuffed! It came as 2 regular and 2 tuna, so we split them evenly. The tuna filling was really packed in, which made it even tastier.🖤
Is Eungkeum Tteokbokki worth it for bunsik in Yeonnam-dong?
Yeonnam-dong has a lot of stylish spots for pasta, Japanese food, or brunch, right..? But every now and then you just crave tteokbokki.🤣 That's exactly when Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch comes in handy!
