Fruit waffles at a Namyangju river café: Waltz and Dr. Mahn

In short

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a café beside the Bukhangang River in Namyangju, Gyeonggi. I tried waffles with fruit and ice cream, Viennese coffee, and hand-drip coffee while looking around its classic indoor and outdoor spaces. Verdict: a memorable stop for a relaxed drive day.

A café with a distinctive atmosphere along the Bukhangang River

I recently went for a drive around Namyangju and stopped by a café near the Bukhangang River :) This time, I visited Waltz and Dr. Mahn (왈츠와 닥터만) in Namyangju. There are so many cafés along the river drive, but this one felt a little different from the huge cafés that are everywhere these days, so I had been curious about it.

The building itself has such a distinctive mood, and because it sits right in front of the Bukhangang River, it seemed like the perfect place to drink coffee while watching the water on a nice day. I love cafés with this kind of atmosphere, so I was looking forward to it even before visiting haha.

Café exterior with a red-brick look

Red-brick building and Bukhangang River views

The building is quite striking even before you go in. Its red-brick-style exterior is decorated with plants and pots here and there, so rather than feeling neat and polished like a newly opened café, it has the mood of an old restaurant or café somewhere in Europe? That made it even more distinctive.

The building is large, and once inside, the space is divided into several areas, so it felt bigger than expected. I think it is worth a visit even for anyone looking for a large café in Namyangju.

And the biggest draw here is definitely the view! The Bukhangang River is right in front of you, so you can look out over the river from the café. It was not perfectly clear on the day I visited, but the river and mountains together still made for a really pretty scene. It felt so open that simply sitting there was healing haha. The mountains across the river are especially grand, and the scenery is definitely different from what you see in the city. I thought it would be a lovely place when you want some fresh air near Seoul. If you are looking for a Bukhangang River café, it is worth visiting for the view alone!

Classic interiors and outdoor tables

The indoor atmosphere was really distinctive too. There were lots of wood-toned walls and furnishings, and every table was set with a white tablecloth, so it felt more like a classic restaurant than an ordinary café.

There were paintings on the walls, and the lighting and chairs had a classic feel too, creating an overall warm, old-world atmosphere. Personally, I liked that this kind of place also makes a pretty background in photos. It seemed like a nice option for a day when you want somewhere with a little atmosphere, such as an anniversary or date.

There is outdoor seating too! Tables are set up right beside the Bukhangang River, with trees, flowerpots, and flowers around them, so it would be wonderful to sit outside if the weather is nice. Each table has a parasol, offering some shade on bright days, and above all, being able to see the river right in front of you is so good!! I feel like time would fly while drinking coffee and looking out at the river lol. I liked the interior too, but I especially wanted an outdoor seat on a nice day.

Waffles topped with fruit and ice cream

We ordered waffles and coffee at the café. The waffles came topped with ice cream and fruit including oranges, bananas, green grapes, and blueberries, so they looked really pretty from the start. There were several scoops of ice cream too, and they were sweet and delicious with the waffles.

The waffles were warm and crisp, so they went really well with the cold ice cream. The fruit also gave us something fresh to enjoy between bites.

We ordered Viennese coffee and hand-drip coffee, and the cups especially caught my eye because they were so pretty. They were classic floral teacups with gold rims, definitely unlike the cups you commonly see at cafés these days!

Even though it was just a cup of coffee, it somehow felt like a special occasion haha. I think details like this bring the café's atmosphere to life even more. Overall, Waltz and Dr. Mahn felt less like a café you visit for the coffee flavor alone and more like a place to enjoy the atmosphere, Bukhangang River view, and space together.

A driving route linking Dumulmeori and Mul-ui Jeongwon

Many large cafés these days are spacious and pretty, but some have a similar feel; this one definitely has its own character! From the red-brick building to the classic indoor décor and garden-like outdoor space, it was fun just looking around. If you are heading near Dumulmeori, it would be nice to include this café in the same outing. A walk at Dumulmeori followed by a rest at a nearby café would be just perfect!

Driving café route near Dumulmeori

Especially if you are looking for a place to spend a day driving near Seoul, a route like Dumulmeori → Bukhangang River drive → Waltz and Dr. Mahn could work nicely. When looking for cafés around Dumulmeori, it is nice to widen your search a little toward the Bukhangang River instead of only looking right around Dumulmeori, because you can find places with great atmosphere like this.

Mul-ui Jeongwon is nearby too, so on a nice day I also recommend taking a walk there before heading to the café! A riverside walk at Mul-ui Jeongwon followed by a cup of coffee while taking in the Bukhangang scenery would make a pretty satisfying day trip near Seoul. Personally, when I travel or go on dates, I prefer slowly visiting several nearby places rather than only stopping at one, so this is how I would plan a Namyangju outing haha.

For a date day when you want some atmosphere

I would especially recommend it to anyone looking for a date spot. The café itself has so much atmosphere that, rather than simply going out for coffee, it would make a lovely full-day date of driving, looking at the river, and chatting leisurely at the café. It would probably be more memorable than an ordinary chain café for a slightly special day like an anniversary too. The classic atmosphere is great for photos, and with the Bukhangang River view as well, it seems perfect for a day when you want to set the mood!

Classic Bukhangang River café space for a date

Waltz and Dr. Mahn had a charm that feels a little different from the trendy aesthetic cafés of today. The old-world building and interior are distinctive, and with the Bukhangang River spread out in front, simply sitting in the café felt relaxing. I think it would be truly lovely to drink coffee while looking at the river from an outdoor seat on a nice day.

I recommend it to anyone like me who enjoys chatting over coffee at pretty cafés, anyone looking for a driving route near Seoul, or anyone searching for a Bukhangang River café, Dumulmeori café, or large café in Namyangju! Pair it with Dumulmeori or Mul-ui Jeongwon and it makes a great Namyangju day-trip itinerary too. Personally, the café's unique atmosphere is what stayed with me!
