Mapo café baguettes with chocolate banana pudding: Boulangerie Copain

In short

Boulangerie Copain is a bakery café in Mapo, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Mangwon Hangang Park. I took a baguette, basil sandwich, and chocolate banana pudding to the Han River for a picnic, and the baguette dipped in pudding worked surprisingly well. A great takeaway stop before a Han River date.

Before going to Mangwon Hangang Park for a date, I stopped by Boulangerie Copain (블랑제리코팡), a Mangwon-dong bakery, to pick up some easy bread to eat. It is along the Mangwon-dong walking route, so it is in a great spot to add to a Mangwon Hangang Park or Mangridan-gil date itinerary.

This place was especially interesting because it had appeared on Master of Living, a popular Korean TV show. I had been curious before visiting after hearing it was featured in an episode on croissants and baguettes.

What is the inside like?

Interior of Boulangerie Copain

Maybe because it is such a famous bakery, there were lots of bread-making machines inside.

You simply put the bread you want on a tray. There is nowhere to eat inside, so think of it as takeaway only〰️

The sold-out chocolate baguette and choosing bread

I originally wanted to try the signature chocolate baguette, but I went around evening and it was sold out, which was a little disappointing. It is a popular item, so I recommend visiting a bit earlier if you want to try it! ‼️Apparently it comes out at 10:00‼️

The baguettes are not set out in advance; they take one out for you when you order.

There were plenty of other kinds of bread, too. They make their bread by hand every day, kneading and fermenting it using skills from an S-class hotel bakery background, so every item in the shop looked delicious.

They sell coffee and other drinks as well as bread, and there is a sale from 19:00, so keep that in mind before visiting〰️

If you ask when packing the baguette, they cut it into easy-to-eat pieces, which made it convenient to take to the Han River~

Even with its lid on, the basil sandwich had a lovely strong aroma. It was good for an easy bite and tasted like a great fit for brunch or a light meal, too.

And then, the baguette I had been looking forward to! It was incredibly moist, enough that you could tell it was freshly made bread.

It was mild and nutty even on its own, but we tried a new pairing: dipping it into the chocolate banana pudding..

Baguette with chocolate banana pudding

Sitting by the Han River, we spread chocolate banana pudding on it. The sweet chocolate-banana flavor with the mild baguette was a much better pairing than expected(?)

I do not really like bananas, but its smooth flavor came through strongly, so I think anyone could enjoy it.. I recommend trying them together if you are going on a Han River picnic! Add a sip of iced café latte, and it was a proper Han River picnic snack.

The view was pretty, there were sweet snacks, and it put me in an even better mood.. 🤍

If you are looking for a bakery stop on a bread crawl in Mangwon-dong, Boulangerie Copain is worth visiting at least once.

Bakery visit on a Mangwon-dong bread crawl

From the croissants and baguettes featured on Master of Living to chocolate baguettes, basil crunch bread, and sandwiches, there was a wide variety to choose from according to your taste. It also felt special that the shop makes its bread and menu items itself. Above all, it is close to Mangwon Hangang Park, making it ideal for picking up bread and eating it by the river. If you are planning to go to the Han River while on a Mangwon-dong date like us, I recommend choosing your bread and taking it with you in advance! Next time, I should go a little earlier for the chocolate baguette that was sold out.
