Sinnonhyeon café: sweet potato matang financier, Upper and Under
In short
Upper and Under is a dessert café on Gangnam-daero 102-gil between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul, using its basement, first and second floors as seating. After lunch with a friend, the order was a fig cake for 8,500 won, a sweet potato matang (candied sweet potato) financier for 4,700 won, a mango lemon ade for 8,500 won and a salted caramel cream coffee for 8,000 won. Alternating between cakes and baked sweets made Upper and Under an easy second stop after a Gangnam lunch.

After lunch with a friend in Gangnam, I started craving something sweet with a cup of coffee. Parting ways right after eating felt like a waste, so I looked for a nice-vibe café nearby and ended up at Upper and Under, a café near Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam.

I always love cafés with good desserts, and Upper and Under had a wide range from cakes to baked goods, so it was fun to choose. The cake topped with seasonal figs and the somewhat unusual sweet potato candy financier especially caught my eye. Let me tell you about the time my friend and I spent enjoying sweet desserts at Upper and Under!
Where is Upper and Under? Between Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations
Upper and Under is a café at 28 Gangnam-daero 102-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station. It's a great spot for anyone who's had lunch in Gangnam and is walking with a friend looking for a café afterward.

It's a nice place to take a break and enjoy coffee and dessert right in the middle of bustling Gangnam.

Since Upper and Under uses multiple floors and is quite large, it has a different charm than your typical small dessert café.

If you're meeting friends in Gangnam or looking for a Sinnonhyeon café for a second stop after a meal, this one is worth keeping an eye on.
Three floors, three moods: seating inside Upper and Under
Upper and Under uses the basement through 2nd floor as café space, so there's a wide range of seating to choose from. It was also charming that each floor has a slightly different atmosphere.

From bright, naturally lit spots to quieter seats for spending time calmly, there's something to suit every preference.
My friend and I, the two of us, had a great time sitting comfortably after lunch and chatting about this and that. In a place as crowded as Gangnam always is, having a space to relax over a cup of coffee is even more welcome.
Upper and Under's dessert menu and what we ordered
What we ordered at Upper and Under were four items: fig cake ₩8,500, sweet potato candy financier ₩4,700, mango lemon ade ₩8,500, and salted caramel cream coffee ₩8,000. Since we'd come looking for a place with good desserts, the happy dilemma started right from choosing the menu.

With cakes and all kinds of baked goods on display, it felt like a waste to pick just one.
- 🍰 Fig cake ₩8,500
- Sweet potato candy financier ₩4,700
- Mango lemon ade ₩8,500
- Salted caramel cream coffee ₩8,000

Coffee, a refreshing ade, cake, and a financier too! Even though we'd already eaten a filling lunch, it's like a whole new stomach appears in front of dessert. Haha.
Fig cake and sweet potato matang financier at Upper and Under
The first thing that caught my eye at Upper and Under was the ₩8,500 fig cake. A cake topped with seasonal figs looks delicious just to look at, and the subtle sweetness unique to figs is such an appealing dessert quality.

I picked it hoping for a combination of soft cake and figs, and it won me over just from the visuals.

For anyone who especially loves figs, this seems like a menu item worth trying once during the season.

And then the sweet potato candy financier — the name alone made me curious! Unlike the plain financiers I usually eat, it was fun to enjoy the familiar snack of candied sweet potato in the form of a baked pastry.

Ordering it alongside the fig cake meant we could share two very different styles of dessert, which was even better. Alternating between a sweet cake and a baked pastry — that's what makes coming to a dessert café worth it!
How were the mango lemon ade and salted caramel cream coffee?
Along with the desserts, the drinks we ordered at Upper and Under were mango lemon ade ₩8,500 and salted caramel cream coffee ₩8,000.

I picked the ade hoping for mango sweetness and lemon tartness, and it turned out to be a great pairing to have alongside the sweet desserts.

Salted caramel cream coffee sounds sweet and a little salty just from the name. If you like cream coffee, this is a drink worth keeping an eye on.

Is Upper and Under worth it as a second stop after lunch in Gangnam?
We stopped by after lunch just to grab a light coffee with a friend, and ended up thoroughly enjoying cake and a financier too! Upper and Under, this Sinnonhyeon café in Gangnam, was a place where it's genuinely fun to pick from a variety of desserts.

I'd recommend it as a café to visit when you're on a date with a friend in Gangnam, or when you're craving something sweet after lunch. Next time I'm in Gangnam, I want to try the other cakes and baked goods too. ♡
