Bongdam Chinese restaurant spicy pork rice bowl: Dongcheonhong

There's a Chinese restaurant I've noticed a few times while driving around Bongdam. It's called Dongcheonhong.

Every time I passed by, the exterior looked pretty upscale and clean, and I kept thinking, "I really need to check that place out sometime!"

Then I got the chance to visit as part of a sponsored campaign, so I finally went. I already had high hopes since I'd been curious about it, and once I got there, both the food and the interior turned out to be quite satisfying.

Let me share an honest review of whether it lived up to my expectations.

What is Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch like inside?

The moment I stepped inside Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch, I could tell it felt different from a typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The interior has a gray brick look with birdcage-shaped lighting fixtures scattered throughout, and combined with the soft lighting, it had quite a lot of atmosphere.

The ceilings were high and the space felt open, so I never felt cramped while eating. I especially liked the seats by the floor-to-ceiling windows.

It's also a nice space for photos — I got good shots not just of the food but of the interior itself. I thought it would be a great spot for a family meal, dining with kids, or a casual night out when you want a bit of ambiance.

These days a lot of people looking for good restaurants in Hwaseong's Bongdam area care as much about atmosphere and cleanliness as they do about taste, and on that front, this place was quite satisfying.

The three dishes we ordered

That day we ordered three things: sweet-and-sour pork, jjajangmyeon, and the uhwarou pork rice bowl. Since it was just the two of us, we ordered a bit generously so we could try a variety.

🍖 Crispy sweet-and-sour pork (tangsuyuk)

We started with the sweet-and-sour pork. The batter was quite crispy and light. It didn't have the heavy, greasy feel that sweet-and-sour pork sometimes has, and the meat itself was springy with plenty of juice.

Personally, I prefer sweet-and-sour pork eaten crispy rather than soaked in sauce until it goes soft, and since the fried coating itself tasted great, it was good even without the sauce.

🍝 Jjajangmyeon that is easy for kids to eat

Next up, jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles)! The black bean sauce wasn't overly strong — it was clean and had a subtle sweetness. The noodles were nice and chewy, and my daughter said it was delicious and ate quite a lot of it.

One interesting thing: they sell the jjajang sauce separately for takeaway! I was told the price was ₩7,000 for about 2–3 servings.

They said it keeps for 2 days refrigerated or 1 month frozen, so it seemed like a good option for anyone who wants to enjoy jjajangmyeon easily at home.

🌶️ The standout: uhwarou spicy pork rice bowl

The dish that impressed me most that day was the uhwarou pork rice bowl.

I'd heard it was a special menu item only available at Dongcheonhong, so I was curious, and it ended up being the most memorable dish I had that day. It's pork belly stir-fried until spicy and served over rice, with onions and cheongyang chili in a sweet-spicy sauce that really brought out the umami.

At first I thought, "Won't this be a bit too spicy?" but once I mixed it with the rice, the spicy and sweet flavors balanced out nicely, and I kept going back for more.

How much does a meal cost at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch?

Prices are a bit higher than a typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant, but given the atmosphere and the food, it didn't feel too pricey for anyone looking for a higher-end Chinese dining experience.

They also had a variety of other Chinese dishes like kkanpunggi, yurinji, chili shrimp, and palbochae, plus course menus. If you're celebrating a special occasion or visiting with a group, going for the course menu seems like a good option.

Who will like Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch?

This place seems like a great fit if you're looking for a comfortable space to eat with kids, or if you want a family meal somewhere a bit more atmospheric than an average Chinese restaurant.

If you're like me and always on the hunt for new spots to eat around Bongdam, Dongcheonhong is worth adding to your list of good restaurants in the area. This visit also made me want to come back and try other dishes like kkanpunggi, yurinji, or chili shrimp.
