Black cod two ways at a Hwajeong Station lunch spot: Min Cook Misoyaki

In short

Min Cook Misoyaki is a Japanese grilled fish and rice bowl restaurant a 3-minute walk from Hwajeong Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. At lunch, salt-grilled black cod (18,000 won) and miso-grilled black cod (19,000 won) were ordered side by side, with handmade shrimp tempura added, and both plates were rich and savory with no fishy smell. For grilled black cod as a lunch meal, Min Cook Misoyaki is the answer.

Lunch spread of grilled black cod at Min Cook Misoyaki

Today's post is a review of Min Cook Misoyaki, my pick for a Hwajeong Station lunch spot! It's a place where a certified Korean master of Japanese cuisine makes rice bowls and Japanese-style grilled fish, and apparently it carries the know-how of the famous "Century-old Store" Min Cook Dashima. I hadn't been to Hwajeong Station for lunch in a while, so here's my review~!

What Min Cook Misoyaki looks like, and its opening hours

Min Cook Misoyaki is open 11:00–21:00 and closed every Sunday. Break time is 15:00–16:00, last order is at 14:30 and 20:30, and it's also closed for Chuseok holiday on Sep 25–26.

The exterior gives off a clean, proper Japanese restaurant vibe! Being a newly opened Hwajeong Station spot, everything looked tidy. Upstairs is the century-old store Min Cook Dashima, right there:)

And there it is — the Korean Master Craftsman plaque! Knowing the grilled fish and rice bowls are made by a certified master in Japanese cuisine made me even more excited.

Getting there: 3 minutes on foot from Hwajeong Station, parking at E-Mart

Min Cook Misoyaki is a 3-minute walk from Hwajeong Station, so it's easy to get to and a great spot to recommend for a lunch meetup! For parking, park at the E-Mart lot and it's free:) I parked there too and it was really convenient.

Inside Min Cook Misoyaki: mostly bar seats, easy for solo diners

The interior keeps that cozy, tidy Japanese restaurant feel! Overall calm decor! And since it's mostly bar seating, it's also a great spot to eat solo!

Side dishes, egg porridge and salad that come with the meal

Basic banchan including danmuji and seasoned namul
A neatly arranged plate of side dishes

The banchan (side dishes) were tidy and clean, pure and simple! There was crunchy danmuji (pickled radish) and something like a seasoned aged-kimchi namul — and this turned out to be a hidden gem! Great texture, a slight tang, and it went really well with the grilled fish.

Egg porridge served as an appetizer
A bowl of soft egg porridge

The soft egg porridge was great as an appetizer! Topping it with that side dish added even more umami and made it taste even better!

Lettuce salad with sun-dried tomatoes
Miso soup served alongside the meal

The fresh lettuce salad with sun-dried tomatoes felt special too, and the miso soup felt higher quality than at other Japanese restaurants!

Is the handmade shrimp tempura worth adding?

A plate of crispy-battered shrimp tempura

This is the handmade shrimp tempura — just looking at it, you can tell this place is good at frying! Usually I don't finish the batter at other places, but here the batter itself was well seasoned, so I ate all of it:)

Salt-grilled black cod: savory, with no fishy smell

Finally, the salt-grilled black cod arrived! I usually could only get black cod at izakayas, so I was glad to find it on the menu at a place open for lunch and dinner! Just looking at it, the fish itself was thick and glossy! Zero fishy smell.

I ate the first bite plain, and the fishy smell I was most worried about was completely absent — it was full of black cod's oily, savory flavor. It tasted fresh!

Whether dipped in soy sauce or eaten on top of rice, it was a real winner! Certified as a great Hwajeong Station lunch spot. Since grilled black cod itself is a fairly special menu item, if you love black cod, definitely try it here, both salt-grilled and miso-grilled:)

How does miso-grilled black cod differ from the salt-grilled version?

Miso-grilled black cod brushed with miso paste

This is the miso-grilled black cod! While the salt-grilled version is seasoned lightly so it's not salty, the miso-grilled version has miso brushed on the black cod before grilling! I squeezed on a bit of the lemon juice served on the side, and the aroma got even better! Again, zero fishy taste, and the miso and black cod flavors go really well together.

I think I'll come back here whenever I want grilled black cod!! If you're looking for a Hwajeong Station lunch spot, I highly recommend Min Cook Misoyaki, where you can enjoy rice bowls, cutlets, and a variety of Japanese-style grilled fish dishes including black cod, which is hard to find elsewhere. Be sure to stop by><
