If you are wondering what to eat on a Danyang trip, I would like to recommend this place at least once: Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap! To be honest, there are restaurants near tourist spots that you visit for the location more than the food, right? But as I ate here, I thought, “Ah, I see why people call this a Danyang Gugyeong Market favorite.” 😂

We visited with three adults and one child, and from the side dishes to the mains and sauces, there was not a single thing that was not delicious, so we absolutely wolfed it down. Danyang is famous for garlic, and I loved that it was not just served as a small extra here—you can properly enjoy it across a whole meal, from black garlic rice to spicy pork and boiled pork.
A convenient stop near Danyang Gugyeong Market while traveling
Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is close to Danyang Gugyeong Market, making it a great lunch stop during a trip. We came by car and parked at the riverside free parking lot, then walked for about five minutes.

Around tourist attractions, driving in circles looking for parking can drain you before you even eat. 😂

If you use the riverside free parking lot like we did, it is a nice route: park, walk to the restaurant, then look around Gugyeong Market afterward.

A comfortable interior that worked well for families, not just tourists

Once inside, it felt more comfortable and homey than I expected. We were three adults plus one child, and we could eat comfortably at the table.

There were notices on the walls about black garlic and wrap greens, along with signs of celebrity visits, so it was fun to look around. More than anything, because we were traveling with a child, I was a little worried the food might be too strongly seasoned or that there would not be much for the child to eat, but...

When the full spread arrived, it was generous, with mains adults would enjoy as well as a variety of side dishes and wrap greens.

We ordered black garlic pork ssambap for two and boiled pork ssambap for one
We ordered black garlic spicy pork ssambap (rice served with leafy wraps) for two people and black garlic boiled pork ssambap for one. The black garlic spicy pork ssambap was ₩17,000 per person and the black garlic boiled pork ssambap was ₩19,000 per person. The menu says each requires an order for at least two people, but the boiled pork ssambap could be ordered for one. As the dishes began arriving... wow, the spread was seriously generous.
It was not just spicy pork and boiled pork. There was doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), wrap greens, assorted seasoned vegetables, and side dishes all laid out, so it felt like having a proper Korean meal during our trip! Even when the main dishes are delicious, I tend to be less satisfied if the banchan (side dishes) disappoint, but amazingly, there was not a single bad side dish here.

And even more amazingly... there was not a bad sauce either. Haha. As we kept making wraps with this and that, we ate so much that we nearly forgot to take photos.
Black garlic rice with a fragrant garlic aroma
Personally, the black garlic rice was one of the most memorable things here. Bring the rice close and you immediately catch that distinctive garlic aroma, but it was not overwhelmingly spicy or sharp. The rice itself was savory, so I kept reaching for it. Without realizing it, I thought, “Does eating just this rice somehow make me feel healthier? Haha.”
They say their black garlic is fermented for 15 days, cooked warm, then dried for several days before use. Maybe that is why it definitely felt different from the rice I usually eat! Since we had come all the way to Danyang, it was nice to try a meal with this kind of local character.
Black garlic spicy pork that is hard to stop eating once you start wrapping
Then came the black garlic spicy pork!

You can see from the photo how thoroughly the seasoning has soaked in, right? 😍 I tried the hot spicy pork with the large pieces of vegetables, and the seasoning was such a rice thief.

It is delicious on its own, but this is a ssambap restaurant, so of course you have to eat it as a wrap.

Lay down a fresh wrap leaf, add black garlic rice, pile on plenty of spicy pork, and take one big bite!

Add ssamjang (savory soybean-chili dipping paste) to taste and... ah... that is a one-bowl-of-rice-disappears-instantly situation. Haha. There were many kinds of wrap greens too, and I liked how the texture changed depending on which leaf you used.
Tender boiled pork paired with garlic sauce
But what I personally found really delicious here was the boiled pork.

You can tell in the photo too—the boiled pork was not dry at all, just wonderfully tender~

The meat was soft even on its own, but dipping it generously in the garlic sauce served with it made it taste completely different. Normally, the garlic sauce is poured over the boiled pork, but the owner saw that we had a child with us and thoughtfully served the sauce separately instead of pouring it over the meat, so our child could eat it too. The owner is the best!!
The moment I piled on the sauce, the garlic aroma really came through, and it paired so well with the tender boiled pork. One big bite of soft bossam (Korean boiled pork) topped with plenty of garlic sauce—gulp! Ah... it was delicious. Hahaha. I like garlic to begin with, so I especially loved this combination. I also recommend making a big wrap with lettuce or perilla leaf, black garlic rice, boiled pork, and garlic sauce!
Even the crab doenjang-jjigae was refreshing

And doenjang-jjigae is quietly important in a full Korean spread, right? The stew here had blue crab in it, so the broth was refreshing. After a bite of spicy pork or boiled pork, a spoonful of hot doenjang-jjigae felt like it cleared the palate right out! The broth was earthy yet refreshing—the kind that makes you want to mix rice into it.

It was not just the mains that tasted good; from the rice and side dishes to the sauces and doenjang-jjigae, everything made me keep reaching back for more.
For a proper Korean meal on a Danyang trip
The three adults and one child in our group left truly full. More than anything, what stayed with me most from this meal was that it was not a place where only the mains tasted good.

The black garlic rice was delicious, the spicy pork was delicious, the boiled pork was tender, the garlic sauce was delicious, every side dish kept calling to us, and even the crab doenjang-jjigae was refreshing! We really ate in a rush, making wrap after wrap from the whole spread. Haha. If you want a hearty lunch before or after looking around Gugyeong Market, or want food that carries a sense of Danyang’s local character on your trip, this was a good choice. Only after eating did I think, “Ah, now I understand why this place is mentioned so often as a Danyang Gugyeong Market favorite.” 😊 If you are craving a hearty Korean spread in Danyang with lots of meat and wrap greens, I think Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is worth remembering. 🧄💚
