For my friend's birthday, I wanted to treat her to a proper, classy spread, so I went to Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch, a Balsan Station restaurant famous for really nailing seaweed soup.

Parking at Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch: 3 hours free

Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch has its own dedicated parking lot in the building, so there's zero parking stress. Ask for parking registration when you pay after your meal and you get 3 hours free, so you can enjoy a leisurely, unhurried meal.

In the Magok-Balsan area, notorious for crowds and heavy traffic, parking is usually the biggest headache when picking a restaurant. Having that sorted made me feel at ease from the start.

This is a Korean set-menu restaurant with a signature dish so distinctive that a deep, rich-simmered seaweed soup is essentially the main event. From the neat handmade cockle bibimbap to the table groaning under an array of side dishes, it's a full spread that feels like a mother's carefully prepared birthday table.

We ordered the Mikodam set for two, which comes with the widest and most substantial variety. By the way, if you participate in the Naver receipt review event, you also get a free fluffy, thick egg roll — don't forget to take part, I'd recommend it.

What comes with the Mikodam set for two, and the banchan lineup

The Mikodam Korean set for two comes generously loaded with seaweed soup, cockle bibimbap, a choice of side menu, and a wide range of hearty basic banchan.

Plates of japchae, pork stir-fry, and other basic side dishes

Just the sight of the neatly set side dish lineup after ordering is enough to fill you up. A fresh salad to whet the appetite, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) that's a must at any feast, sweet-and-spicy pork stir-fry, and golden pan-fried fish come out in turn. On top of that, savory seasoned namul, salty jangajji (pickled vegetables), crunchy fresh kimchi, and tangy-sweet jellyfish salad — every single side dish is steeped in care and skilled hands.

Right in the center of the table, the main dishes — cockle bibimbap and steaming hot seaweed soup — took their place magnificently, alongside the golden beef jeon that came as the birthday service.

Side-dish refills by kiosk, pork stir-fry included free

You can easily request extra side dishes through the kiosk set up at each table, and surprisingly, even a main-level dish like the pork stir-fry can be refilled for free! That kind of value and generous hospitality was genuinely touching.

How the beef jeon and seaweed soup tasted

The beef jeon was golden on the outside with an exceptional savoriness inside. Take a warm-fried piece of beef jeon, gently top it with the tangy chive salad served alongside, roll it up and take a bite — the jeon's rich meaty juices and the chives' sharp, spicy flavor come together in perfect harmony.

And the seaweed soup, the dish I had the highest expectations for, truly delivered a broth of real depth. It's on a completely different level from the plain seaweed soup you make at home. The broth is clean with no heaviness, yet deeply savory. It felt like drinking a rich, painstakingly simmered restorative tonic. It offered a depth totally unlike any seaweed soup I've had before, and I emptied the stone pot down to the last drop.

Cockle bibimbap wrapped in seasoned seaweed

The other signature specialty, cockle bibimbap, is generously packed with plump, tender cockles. Mix the fluffy rice and seasoned cockles together in the big bowl and you get an explosion of chewy texture and spicy-tangy seasoning. Wrap this well-mixed cockle rice in crispy seasoned seaweed and the savoriness doubles — you'll be shoveling it in right down to the last spoonful.
