The main dish we ordered and tried this time was Haemokjeong Seoknam's most famous menu item: the seafood stew.

The moment I saw the huge hot plate piled high with seafood, my mouth started watering. It even came with a cute custom-made pick reading 'Haemokjeong — Grand Prize for Seafood Pancake,' which made me snap photos before even taking a bite.

① Meaty whole octopus and fresh squid, bite by bite

When I lifted the seafood with tongs, I was amazed to find a large, hearty whole octopus in there. The moment I picked it up, I could feel its bouncy, springy texture right through the tongs.

The squid, also left whole rather than cut, was incredibly moist and tender inside. The mildly spicy, sweet sauce had soaked deep into the seafood, so the umami burst with every bite. It made total sense to me why Haemokjeong Seoknam is such a beloved Korean restaurant in the area.

② Cod milt, rice cake sticks and minari (water dropwort) in the stew

Inside the seafood galbijjim, besides the octopus and squid, there's also tender ribs that soaked up the sauce, plump gonads (godoni), chewy rice cake sticks (tteoksari), and sharp water dropwort (minari), all in generous amounts.

The variety of ingredients came together harmoniously, making it fun to pick and choose what to eat next, and best of all, the sauce wasn't overly spicy or intense, so it's a flavor anyone, of any age, could enjoy. I thought there couldn't be a better Chuseok restaurant dish for gathering with elderly parents or young kids.

③ Squid fritters: crisp outside, tender inside

The squid fritters we enjoyed as a side dish with the seafood galbijjim were also a real standout! Piled high in a basket, they were freshly fried and crispy on the outside, packed with moist squid meat inside.

The oil was drained well, so there was no greasiness, just a nice savory flavor. Dipping the crispy fritters into the spicy-sweet galbijjim sauce was an amazing combination. If you visit, you definitely have to try this pairing!
