Greek moussaka at Suwanjigu Form, a Suwan restaurant in Gwangju
In short
Suwanjigu Form is a Blue Ribbon Western restaurant in the Suwan district of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Two of us ordered the octopus dish at 28,000 won, the Greek-style lasagna (moussaka) at 27,000 won, and the pancetta pasta with squid ink noodles at 26,000 won, and cleared all three plates, with the flour-free moussaka of grilled eggplant and potato layered with cheese béchamel the standout. Suwanjigu Form is small, so a reservation is essential, but it is an easy recommendation for a date or an anniversary dinner.

Inside Suwanjigu Form: interior and amenities

The wine bottles and colorful blue and red ribbons are the first thing you see when you arrive. Is there any other restaurant in Suwan-jigu with this many ribbons? (It's popular, so I'd recommend booking ahead!!)

Right at the entrance there's a coat rack and some Febreze. Would be great for hanging up thick winter coats.

Dim lighting with a big window showing off a green view. Such a pretty, atmospheric spot.

With this upscale vibe, it feels like the perfect Western restaurant for a date or an anniversary.

It's an open kitchen, so you can watch the food being made deliciously right in front of you.

There's even a restroom inside the restaurant, which made things more convenient. Form thinks of everything.

As soon as we walked in, the owner showed us to our seats. Our table for two had cutlery, water glasses, and the menu all neatly set out.
What's on the menu at Suwanjigu Form, and the three dishes we ordered

Form's main dishes are steaks, along with salads, pasta, and Small Dishes made with seasonal ingredients. The menu had a lot of unusual items — among the standouts were squid ink spaghetti with pancetta, fish roe pasta, an octopus dish, carozza, fried eggplant, and shrimp dishes, all looking pretty upscale. Even with so many choices, we'd already picked out the signature dishes we wanted, so we ordered exactly that. What we ordered was:
- Octopus dish ₩28,000
- Greek-style lasagna (moussaka) ₩27,000
- Pancetta pasta ₩26,000
Octopus dish, 28,000 won

First to arrive was the octopus dish. It came with carrot purée, candied peanuts, sunflower seeds, and grilled alba cabbage, and cutting the octopus up with the vegetables together was really delicious.
Pancetta pasta with squid ink noodles, 26,000 won

Next up was the squid ink spaghetti with pancetta — house-made pancetta, pecorino cheese, butter, and garlic sauce with a spring greens garnish. It tasted like something familiar yet unique somehow, and it was delicious too...
Greek-style lasagna (moussaka), 27,000 won

Finally, the lasagna! Apparently this Greek-style lasagna is layered with grilled eggplant, grilled potato, and cheese béchamel instead of flour. We ordered it because everyone said it was delicious, and it was, but I also loved that it had no flour in it. Plus the plating is just so pretty...

Every dish that came out smelled so good I wanted to dive right in, but I held off just to get this three-shot photo~ You could feel the care put into each dish, both in taste and plating.
My sister cutting the lasagna

The octopus is so fresh, it's chewy when you bite into it

First time I've had lasagna with potato in it... it's delicious!!

This one's got a killer sauce
Wow, we really ate well with three dishes between the two of us!!

After we finished eating, the owner gave us a dessert. It was refreshing, perfect for cleansing the palate. Such a nice touch...
Why Suwanjigu Form is worth booking in Suwan, Gwangju
If you're looking for a restaurant in Suwan-jigu or want Western food in Suwan-jigu, I recommend Form. Every single dish was genuinely delicious (and the owner was kind, too). The restaurant isn't big, so you'll need to book ahead, but even so — it was delicious.
Also, the owner apparently visits the dawn market every day to personally pick out seasonal ingredients. No wonder everything was so fresh... They recommend wines too, so it could be a nice spot to come for dinner and have a glass in a nice atmosphere. I'll be back next time with my boyfriend.
