We actually do not eat dessert all that often at home. But you know those days when you are out with the kids and suddenly think, “I want something sweet today!” 😊 That day, we had finished grocery shopping at E-Mart and were about to head home when I thought we should grab a snack with the kids first. So we stopped by Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae Main Branch (진심카스테라 김포구래본점), near Gurae Station in Gimpo! Even the name makes it sound like they are seriously devoted to castella, and after trying it myself, I could see why they chose it. 😄 It was a nice place to share with the kids, so here is this dad-of-two’s honest review.

Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae Main Branch is at Units 101, 102, and 103 on the first floor, 525 Gimpohangang 4-ro, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do. It is about a four-minute walk from Gurae Station, and hours are 10:00–21:00. They may close early when ingredients sell out, and they are open every day with no break time.

It is on a main road, so it was not hard to find. I stopped in after shopping at E-Mart that day, and both the route and location were convenient. The sign is easy to spot too, so I think first-time visitors will find it without much trouble.

The castella aroma the moment I opened the door

The moment I opened the door, that sweet, nutty scent unique to freshly baked castella hit me. That smell is honestly unfair. 😂 The kids immediately went, “Wow, it smells so good!” and were interested right away.

Looking at the castella on display, I could still feel that just-warm-from-the-oven quality. The shop is takeaway-only, so there are no seats for eating in, but it was clean and charming overall, which made the wait to order far from boring.

And above all, the owner is incredibly kind. 👍

They smiled at the kids, looked after them, and made us feel comfortable, so I had a good first impression right away. What I especially liked was that we could take heart-shaped candles, forks, knives, and more!

Since we were eating with the kids, little touches like that were quietly lovely. Thank you! 😊

Kiosk ordering and the drink discount

You order using the kiosk in the store. Kiosks are so familiar these days that it was easy to place our order. There were more castella varieties than I expected, and the prices were not too burdensome, so I thought it would be an easy place to drop by when wondering, “What should we have for a snack today?”

Also, when you order castella and drinks together, each drink is discounted by ₩1,000. Castella alone feels a little incomplete, so I recommend ordering a drink too. 😎

The half-and-half castella and drinks we chose with the kids

This is exactly what we ordered that day.

Since we would be sharing with the kids, we chose flavors that were not too polarizing. The fresh cream + Oreo half-and-half castella especially caught our eye.

Getting to enjoy two flavors at once instead of just one made it great for sharing as a family.

Once you take a bite, it feels fluffy on the outside and moist inside. The castella was not too dry and went down softly, so the kids ate it well too.

Soft fresh cream

The fresh cream was smooth and not overly rich. It went well with the sweetness of the castella itself, and the kids especially liked it.

Oreo, just the kids’ taste

Oreo is a perfect hit with kids, of course. 😂 Adding Oreo’s distinctive texture and flavor to the soft castella made it feel different from eating plain castella. Two drinks that went well with castella

This time, we ordered drinks too.

Iced Americano

An Americano is just right with sweet castella. ☕ It cleanly balanced the castella’s sweetness, making it, in my opinion, the safest and best-matched combination. If, like me, you find it a bit much to have a very sweet drink with dessert, I recommend the iced Americano!

Vanilla bean latte

And the vanilla bean latte I was personally looking forward to! Its gently sweet vanilla aroma made it feel like a proper dessert moment alongside the castella. 😊 If the Americano is the clean pairing, the vanilla bean latte is the softer, sweeter one! With the kids there that day, castella and drinks together made for a truly sweet afternoon snack time.

A little event made by heart candles

When I opened the package, there were heart-shaped candles inside too. It may seem like nothing much, but these things are fun for kids. 😂 When we got home and took out the castella, the kids went wild saying they wanted to blow out the candles. Thanks to that, what would have been an ordinary snack became a little event for them. I really liked that small bit of thoughtfulness.
