Four-dish table at an old-school Korean eatery in Mugeo-dong, Ulsan

In short

Jeontong Sigol Chueotang Ulsan Mugeo Branch is an old, house-turned Korean restaurant in Mugeo-dong, near the back gate of the University of Ulsan in Nam-gu. One table held four dishes — chueotang (loach soup), braised beef with tofu, dumpling soup with knife-cut noodles, and two servings of don duruchigi (spicy pork stir-fry) — and not one menu item cost more than 10,000 won. The value and the home-cooked portions were the strong points at Jeontong Sigol Chueotang, while the outdoor restroom was not clean enough.

Where is Jeontong Sigol Chueotang, and where do you park?

Jeontong Sigol Chueotang is near Ulsan University's back gate and easy to find, so accessibility was great. There's room for about 2 cars to park right in front of the restaurant. The value for money is so good it's genuinely popular with students.

Inside the house-turned restaurant: mood and seating

Inside, Jeontong Sigol Chueotang has an old-school feel — it's a converted house. The cozy interior gives off serious grandma's-house vibes.

There were about 8 tables of 4, all with standard chair seating.

The lighting was bright and cheerful. The chairs were really comfortable, too!

Four dishes on one table, starting with the side dishes

Our order arrives! We ordered four different dishes so we could try a bit of everything :)

Let's look at the basic side dishes: kimchi, mountain chili peppers, dongeurangttaeng (mini meat-and-vegetable pancakes), bean sprouts, and radish salad — simple and to the point. *The banchan (side dishes) are homemade, so they seem to vary depending on ingredients.

Don duruchigi (spicy pork stir-fry) with ramyeon noodles on a stone plate

The spicy pork stir-fry (dondurutigi) came with instant ramyeon noodles on the side. Having it arrive on a hot stone plate was such a nice touch :) You can keep eating it warm the whole time. The pork used was thinly sliced, shaved meat — along with onion, green onion, and carrot, the seasoning wasn't too strong, more on the sweet side.

The noodles were cooked perfectly chewy, and slurping them up with the stir-fry on top was so satisfying — the thin shaved pork was tender with real depth of flavor.

Piling the stir-fry onto warm white rice with crunchy bean sprouts and kimchi was also great, bite after bite ^^

Braised beef with tofu: thin beef brisket and silky tofu

The beef tofu braise used woo-samgyeop (thin beef brisket slices). The braise had that nutty fat flavor unique to woo-samgyeop, with a saucy consistency, and the tofu was so soft — I really loved that ^^ The seasoning was sweet and spicy, so I kept reaching for more.

It was also delicious with plain white rice! Being able to eat it warm made it even better.

Dumpling soup with knife-cut noodles: five dumplings in egg broth

The dumpling soup with knife-cut noodles came with about 5 small water dumplings. The knife-cut noodles were cooked just right, which I really liked. The broth had egg in it, giving it a light, clean flavor while still tasting strongly of dumpling soup. The noodles were great for slurping ^^

Chueotang (loach soup), Gyeongsang-style with the bones strained out

The loach soup (chueotang) was Gyeongsang-province style, made clear and mild by fully straining out the bones. They catch the domestic loach themselves and hand-strain every bone, which really shows the care put in. The broth was light yet savory. You can add minced garlic, chili pepper, or Korean pepper powder to taste!

What was good and what fell short at Jeontong Sigol Chueotang

  • Great accessibility near Ulsan University
  • A popular spot among college students
  • The owner is kind and welcoming
  • Known as an honest, fairly priced business
  • No menu item costs over ₩10,000 — truly outstanding value
  • Every menu item is available for takeout
  • A great place to go when you're craving home cooking
  • A generous, filling meal
  • Full of old-school charm
  • The restroom is outside and its cleanliness left something to be desired
  • Hygiene felt slightly lacking in that area

Every dish can be packed to go, too! Full of old-school charm, great value, and genuinely hearty — a solid, filling home-style meal :)
