Samgyeopsal with potato wraps in Hwamyeong-dong, Busan: Go Ok-hui

In short

Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch is a seasoned pork belly restaurant where the staff grill everything for you, a 3–5 minute walk from Exit 1 of Hwamyeong Station in Hwamyeong-dong, Buk-gu, Busan. After a 30-minute wait on a weekend evening, the small 500g set arrived with galbi-seasoned samgyeopsal (pork belly), charcoal gochujang samgyeopsal and honeycomb pork skin, eaten in the signature potato wraps topped with myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic leaves) and wasabi, then finished with doenjang stew and pot fried rice. Since the kitchen grills the meat for 15 minutes before it reaches the table, Go Ok-hui is a Korean BBQ spot where you can eat without any smoke or lingering smell.

Signature photo of grilled seasoned pork belly at Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch

Today I'm sharing a fresh, honest review from Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch, a place in Hwamyeong-dong that's been the talk of the town lately for its pre-grilled seasoned pork belly. I always saw a long line whenever I passed by and had been wanting to visit, and going there in person, I truly understood why people keep coming back.

From the clean, upscale interior to the perfectly grilled meat that meant we just had to sit and eat, plus the unique specialty of the potato wrap and the high-quality side dishes, it was a flawless evening with nothing missing. So let me introduce my review of Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch, the Hwamyeong-dong restaurant that grills the meat for you deliciously.

Where is Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch, and what are the hours?

Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch is located at 10 Hwamyeong-daero, 102, 103-ho, Buk-gu, Busan, and is open daily from 17:00 to 22:30. It's on the first floor of the Sang Tteu Re View building in the heart of Hwamyeong-dong's commercial district, about a 3 to 5 minute walk from Exit 1 of Hwamyeong Station on Busan Subway Line 2.

It's not far from the station exit at all, so it's very convenient to visit by public transit, and if you're driving, you can easily use the building's parking lot or a nearby designated parking area.

How long is the weekend evening wait? Icy sikhye while you wait

A cup of sikhye poured after getting the waiting number

True to its status as one of Hwamyeong-dong's top hotspots, there was a bit of a line when we visited too, but the wait wasn't boring at all — thanks to the cool, sweet icy sikhye service set up in the waiting area!

After getting our waiting number and sipping a cup of sikhye, I was amazed at how the pleasant sweetness and refreshing chill just hit the spot — the care for guests was obvious from the very entrance.

After sipping sikhye and waiting about 30 minutes on a weekend evening, we finally stepped inside Go Ok-hui. My first impression the moment I walked in was, "This is nothing like a typical BBQ restaurant — the interior is so clean!"

Usually at a BBQ place, the tables or floor can be a bit slippery, or the air is thick with pungent smoke and oil smell, but Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch has such good ventilation that the air felt really pleasant.

The warm wood tones blended with the clean cream-colored walls gave it a tidy, sophisticated feel, almost like a Korean fine-dining restaurant. Tables were spaced generously apart so we could chat without worrying about the next table over. Since the meat is fully grilled in the kitchen for 15 minutes before it comes out, there's no smoke billowing off a grill at the table, so no worries about the smell sticking to your clothes or hair either.

It's a classy, comfortable atmosphere perfectly suited for a cozy date with a partner or bringing your parents along.

What comes in the 500g small set: galbi-seasoned and charcoal gochujang pork belly

Menu board at Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch focused on pork belly dishes

Looking at the menu, there was only the pork belly main menu presented neatly, so we didn't have to agonize over choices. We quickly ordered the SET small platter, 500g, which is perfect for two people to share!

Go Ok-hui's biggest strength is that the kitchen grills the meat perfectly for 15 minutes at the ideal doneness and serves it as one finished platter — no need to flip and grill the meat yourself, just chat and eat comfortably. It was so convenient that even waiting after ordering felt exciting.

Before the ordered pork belly arrived, the basic table setting came out with a huge variety of side dishes to pair with the meat — potato for the signature wrap, bracken fern, scallions, garlic, and king oyster mushrooms — it was already perfect from this point.

You can choose whichever pork belly you like, so we picked the galbi-seasoned pork belly and the charcoal gochujang pork belly, and the small platter's basic set even generously included thick honeycomb tripe. Golden, crisp-grilled potato slices and rice cake sticks were also mixed in on the platter, and even before we started eating, it already looked seriously delicious.

As soon as the platter of meat arrived, my boyfriend and I picked up the tongs and dove right into a proper eating session! First, the galbi-seasoned pork belly had a sweet, salty galbi marinade soaked deep inside, so the moment you bit in, juicy flavor and that sweet-and-salty richness spread through your mouth. The charcoal gochujang pork belly had a subtle charcoal aroma tickling your nose, balanced nicely with a spicy-sweet gochujang seasoning that cleanly cut through the fattiness. The slight spiciness was addictive — I kept reaching for more. It was exactly my taste.

Don't sleep on the honeycomb tripe just because it's part of the basic set! Crispy on the outside, incredibly chewy inside, savory flavor bursts more the more you chew, and it was grilled perfectly with no gamey smell at all.

How to eat Go Ok-hui's signature potato wraps

The signature dish at Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch is the potato wrap. I carefully read the "how to enjoy the meat" sign attached to the table, and tried assembling and wrapping the meat myself using the signature "potato wrap" — it was truly a whole new world.

I laid down a single golden, thin-grilled potato slice, topped it with salty myeongi namul (wild garlic leaves) and sharp fresh wasabi or shiitake wasabi, then placed a well-grilled piece of pork belly on top and ate it all in one bite. The crisp, savory texture of the potato, the umami of the myeongi namul, and the juicy burst from the pork belly all came together — the sauce combination was truly fantastic.

On top of that, the charcoal gochujang pork belly went well with mayonnaise or chopped chili to tame the spice, and the honeycomb tripe dipped in mayonnaise with a bit of savory soybean powder or curry powder sprinkled on made it so I never got tired of it, all the way to the very last piece!

Finishing the meal with doenjang stew and pot fried rice

After finishing the meat, we couldn't skip the rice dishes, so we ordered doenjang stew and pot fried rice on top. True to its name, the doenjang stew had a deep, rich broth in the style of countryside doenjang stew! It was generously packed with tofu, zucchini, and vegetables, so every spoonful spread a rich, hearty flavor, and the spicy, clean taste washed away the heaviness after eating meat — my boyfriend and I both thought, wow, they're good at doenjang stew too.

The pot fried rice that came with it had savory gim (seaweed) flakes, sesame seeds, and egg yolk on top, and it was fun to stir-fry it ourselves right on the grill. After pressing it down a bit to get a crispy scorched layer and taking a big spoonful, the savory, sweet-and-salty seasoning came together for a perfect finish.

Yogurt, mouthwash, and coffee corner available after paying

On our way out, toothpicks and mouthwash were well stocked, and they even had yogurt — such a nice touch! And coffee too... they really had everything covered.

Final verdict: is Go Ok-hui worth it for grilled-for-you pork belly in Hwamyeong-dong?

Overview of the table after finishing the meal at Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch

That wraps up my review of Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch, the Hwamyeong-dong restaurant that grills the meat for you deliciously. After eating our fill and paying on the way out, there was even a yogurt service to take as a dessert on the way out — that little touch was genuinely touching.

From the cool sikhye for waiting guests, to perfectly grilled seasoned pork belly and the unique fun of wrapping it in potato, to the hearty doenjang stew and fried rice, ending with a sweet yogurt... the thoughtfulness that takes care of guests from start to finish really moved me.

If you're looking for a place in Hwamyeong-dong that really grills the meat for you properly, or want to enjoy pork belly with a unique and creative sauce combination, I highly recommend a visit to Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch.
