Forest-view café in Ulju, Ulsan for injeolmi bread: MUG
In short
MUG (카페 먹) is a large forest- and mountain-view bakery café on Hyangsandagae-ro in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju, Ulsan. A couple who usually only look at the sea drove out for the smell of trees and had an americano, the signature MUG black latte, injeolmi bread and corn bread at a window seat, and the outdoor tables at MUG allow dogs. By the afternoon most breads, including the cinnamon rolls, were sold out, so a morning visit to MUG is the better plan.

My husband and I usually only see the sea every day, so we wanted to smell some trees for once and drove out to Eonyang in Ulju, Ulsan. There are a lot of large, great-view cafés around Eonyang, but this one is built on a site where a forest once burned down in a wildfire — instead of hiding that painful memory, the place turns it into something symbolic, a place that overcame the pain. That's why my husband and I like it even more. This time I visited MUG (카페 먹).

Great view, pet-friendly, and a gorgeous outdoor space — here's my honest review of MUG.
Why is MUG called "Meok"? Location and parking in Ulju, Ulsan
MUG is located at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. You really need a car to get here, but the drive itself is a scenic course that puts your mind at ease. It's a large Ulsan café with a spacious parking lot too, so you don't have to worry about finding a spot — that's a plus.

True to its name, MUG's (먹 means "ink") exterior is ink-black — apparently a deliberate charred look that fits the café's concept.

Inside the large MUG café: interior mood and laptop seats
The exterior is dark, so I assumed the inside would be dark too, but walking in feels completely different. Right at the entrance, photos are displayed, almost like walking into a gallery.
True to being a large Ulsan café, the interior is huge!! Plenty of seating, though on weekends it fills right up with guests. With so much space and so many seats, it's also great for group visits.

There are laptop-friendly seats too — I was almost jealous watching a digital nomad working there.

Window seats with forest views and quiet outdoor tables at MUG
The reason I love MUG is the view. Forest view... mountain view — sipping coffee while looking out feels like proper healing. Sitting by the window with a cup of coffee and that green scenery, after seeing nothing but the sea every day, even my eyes felt refreshed looking at all that green.

We chatted inside first, but when we stepped outside, there were plenty of seats and it was much quieter — I liked it even more. Next time I'll head straight for the outdoor seats and breathe in the forest air for a real healing session.

Outdoor seating allows pets, so I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a large, pet-friendly café in Eonyang.

MUG menu: one item per person and the signature black latte
One menu item per person is required at MUG. We ordered americano and the black latte — the signature menu item — along with an americano.

MUG is actually a bakery café with lots of bread varieties, but if you go late, a lot of them are gone... We went in the afternoon too and there wasn't much bread left, which was a bit disappointing.

Reading about MUG's history — why it's called MUG, why the exterior is black — made me want to come back again.

Bread that pairs with coffee: MUG corn bread and injeolmi bread
We ordered an iced americano, a hot americano, the black latte, corn bread, and injeolmi bread (sweet rice cake bread).

My coffee-loving parents took one sip and said, "Oh ~ MUG's americano is really good ~." The coffee's flavor isn't heavy, it's clean and light, which made it perfect with the bread.

Still, what really pairs best with the bread is the iced americano!! No need to even say it.

The signature black latte. Black coffee sitting on top of milk — I really wanted to know how they made it.

Wow ~ just look at the black latte with MUG's view. The view really did all the work here. Among MUG's signature menu items there's also a black lemonade and a black lemon smoothie — next time I'll try the lemonade!

And the corn bread and injeolmi bread we ordered.

It's packed full of injeolmi (sweet rice cake) cream.

And genuine corn kernels baked right into the corn bread.

I heard MUG's signature bakery item is actually the cinnamon roll, but since we went late, there were none left — a bit of a shame. Next time I'll go in the morning to try the cinnamon roll.

Eating coffee and bread at MUG while taking in the surrounding scenery didn't feel like simply visiting a café — it felt like a little trip, and that made me genuinely happy. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to sip coffee with a mountain view in a place with great atmosphere.
- Great for a date, grab a window seat
