Jeju roastery café with 50g hand-drip coffee: Gasangsun Coffee

In short

Gasangsun Coffee is a roastery café on Inda 9-gil in Ara-dong, Jeju City, where the owner hand-picks, roasts and brews every bean in house. Stopping in on the way to Manjanggul Cave, I ordered an americano and a hand-drip served in a wine glass, and the 50g of beans per cup made this filter coffee stronger than most espresso. The vanilla latte, built on syrup Gasangsun Coffee makes itself, is the pick for anyone who likes a thick, rich latte.

Today I went all the way out to Ara-dong. It was way too far on the way to Manjanggul Cave from my place, so I stopped at a café halfway there. We can't just stop anywhere, so we picked the spot known for the best coffee in Ara-dong.

Let me introduce Gasangsun Coffee, a café among Ara-dong's cafés that really knows its coffee ☕️. If you love coffee, save this one for sure.

The owner hand-picks, roasts and brews every bean

The owner does everything, from hand-picking the beans to roasting and dripping

At Gasangsun Coffee, the owner hand-picks the beans himself, and he does the roasting by hand too. Maybe that's why, once you taste it, you end up buying the beans.

The coffee menu is varied, and honestly the prices are almost unbelievable. You can drink really good beans at a great value. Thank you for letting us enjoy such good coffee.

Can you visit Gasangsun Coffee with kids?

Gasangsun Coffee also has ice cream, so it's a comfortable Ara-dong café to visit with kids. Adults get serious about the coffee, kids get serious about the ice cream — everyone can enjoy it their own way. And a free drink for national merit recipients — you can really feel the owner's generosity!

The bakery items are also made by the owner himself, so the natural flavor of the ingredients comes through and they're light — I kept reaching for more.

They also sell beans and cold brew. It's not easy to find a place in Ara-dong this serious about coffee, but this is exactly that kind of place, haha.

Coffee omakase course and the americano

Gasangsun Coffee has a coffee omakase course, and next time I want to visit for that. This time I just stopped by quickly before heading to Manjanggul Cave, but it felt like such a waste — I wanted to stay a long time and try lots of different drinks, hahaha. Watching him drip the coffee in front of you, you can feel the care and the skill at the same time — it didn't feel like just a cup of coffee, more like receiving a piece of art.

The americano was so good I honestly drank the whole thing in three sips ^^... exactly my type — bitter, and then right at the end a clean, bitter acidity hits and it's over. It was so good.

Witnessing the mastery of drip coffee

Watching the owner's artistic drip technique — really impressive. And then this cup of coffee comes out... serving it in a wine glass made it feel like an even more special treatment. I guess it works on the same principle as wine, concentrating the aroma and flavor even more.

Cafés usually use about 25g of beans per cup, but Gasangsun Coffee uses 50g. So even though it's technically filter coffee, the strength of the extraction... went beyond espresso and then some. It was beyond imagination. If you ranked Ara-dong cafés by coffee taste, this one would be near the top.

Takeout vanilla latte from Gasangsun Coffee

Vanilla latte made with house-made vanilla syrup

I liked the coffee so much I got a vanilla latte to go too... and the fact that he makes the vanilla syrup himself really shows — the flavor was on another level. If you love a thick, rich latte style, this will be exactly your type.

When you pick coffee, are you more into the acidic style or the thick, rich style? This time I completely fell for the charm of a thick latte. Whenever I'm in Ara-dong, I'll definitely stop by Gasangsun Coffee. I'll come back again and post more of the menu next time!
