Two castella cakes under ₩20,000 in Gimpo Gurae-dong: Jinsim Castella

In short

Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae Main Branch is a takeout-only giant castella cake bakery in Gurae-dong, Gimpo, Gyeonggi. On this visit, the writer picked up a chocolate castella with chocolate cream and a Jinsim castella with half salted caramel, half Earl Grey cream, and the two boxes together came to under ₩20,000. Kids leaned chocolate, adults leaned toward the half-and-half cream, but both cakes were light and satisfying either way.

Exterior of Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae branch

There's a hidden gem of a bakery in Gimpo's Gurae-dong that's perfect for kids' snacks — Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae Main Branch. I'm on my Nth visit already, that's how much my family loves this giant castella (대왕카스테라) spot. It's known for a soft, moist texture and just-right sweetness. There's no seating — it's takeout only.

Store atmosphere and when the castella comes out

There's also a Jinsim Castella in my own neighborhood of Cheongna, and the exterior and interior look almost identical, so you instantly know you're at a Jinsim Castella no matter which branch you visit. They also keep launching new drinks and creams on the café menu, so the flavors never get old.

Every day between 10 and 11 a.m., the Jinsim, chocolate, mugwort, and mocha castella cakes are prepared in sequence. Since it's in Gimpo, I'd also recommend it as a stop on the way from Seoul to Ganghwado.

Where can I park?

You can pull over briefly on the street in front of the store, but it's better to use the lot behind the building or the basement parking lot. If you register for parking, you get 30 minutes free once a day — make sure to register when you order!

The giant castella on display

This is fresh giant castella made with antibiotic-free eggs. Walk inside and you'll see an enormous castella cake, neatly sliced, sitting on the display counter. Some of that is just it cooling down, but the fluffy, pillowy look tells you exactly how it tastes without a single word.

Two cakes for under ₩20,000

We don't eat it often, but my kids really love this bread, so when we do buy it, we buy two at once. I got the chocolate castella loaded generously with chocolate cream, and for the original Jinsim castella, I went half and half with salted caramel and Earl Grey cream.

Even picking two, the total came to under ₩20,000, which feels genuinely competitive on both taste and price given how much cakes and bread cost these days.

Packaging good enough for gifting too

The cakes come packed in sturdy, pretty yellow and red boxes — perfect packaging to bring as a gift or to a gathering. Back home, I opened the box excitedly and found the cream generously packed between thick layers of bread, no skimping at all.

Some places raise prices or skimp on ingredients once they get famous, but this place has kept the same quality and the same prices, so there's really no reason not to recommend it.

First up is the chocolate castella, my kids' favorite and the one they eat the most of. Since it's so huge, we cut it into several pieces and everyone takes as much as they want. There's zero dryness — it's cotton-candy soft, and paired with the rich, fragrant chocolate cream, I'd call this the best combination.

The chocolate chips studded on the outside of the bread add a nice crunch, making every bite fun. The sweetness isn't overwhelming or headache-inducing — it's a refined chocolate flavor that gives you a pleasant sugar boost, which is why both kids and adults can't help but love it, no exceptions.

Next, I tried the much-anticipated half-and-half cream version of the Jinsim castella — I chose salted caramel and Earl Grey. Each cream's character came through so clearly that you could tell them apart by taste alone, no need to even look.

My husband and I really enjoyed it, but the kids definitely preferred the chocolate. Part of that is just how overwhelmingly good the chocolate is, and part of it is personal taste. But no matter which one you eat, the bread itself is so moist and soft, and the cream is smooth without being greasy, so your stomach feels light even after finishing it.

To sum up

Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae Main Branch, perfect for kids' snacks, is a place I can fully recommend on both price and taste. It's not the kind of bread you can easily find at nearby bakeries, and it's a completely different experience from regular castella haha~~~~
