Korean BBQ restaurant in Gongdeok, Seoul: walk-in lunch at Moyeon Mapo

In short

Moyeon Mapo is a hanwoo (Korean beef) dining restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Mapo Station, where every seat is in a private room that closes with a door. Arriving without a reservation 20 minutes after weekday lunch opening meant wait number 9, and the writer and her mother shared one lunch sirloin set and one charcoal-grilled seasoned beef set. The abalone bibimbap and the sirloin grilled at the table by staff stood out, and the beef was tender enough for her mother, who has trouble chewing, to eat comfortably.

Moyeon Mapo was a place where I got to enjoy top-tier hanwoo (Korean beef) dining in a private room.

Today I visited Moyeon Mapo, a well-known beef restaurant near Gongdeok. It's apparently quite famous as a beef spot in Mapo.

Where is Moyeon Mapo, and where do you park?

Moyeon Mapo is about a 3-minute walk from Mapo Station, so it's easy to reach by public transit. For parking, a valet staff member guided us behind the building :) Valet parking is ₩3,000, and there's also a public parking lot across the street.

The blue signage at the front and back of the restaurant, along with the Blue Ribbon marks, caught my eye right away.

Can you walk in to Moyeon Mapo without a reservation?

I visited as a walk-in without a reservation about 20 minutes after weekday lunch opening, and got wait number 9! Once you step inside, the staff greet you kindly. You can also reserve at Moyeon Mapo through Catch Table, so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead!

Moyeon Mapo menu: lunch sets and beef cuts

Hanwoo menu board at Moyeon Mapo

While waiting, I looked over the menu. At Moyeon, they say they select only the finest hanwoo and age it to bring out the best flavor. From sirloin and tenderloin to specialty cuts like skirt steak and raw ribs, plus rice pot dishes and cold noodles, the menu had everything. I ordered one each of the lunch charcoal-grilled seasoned beef set and the sirloin set.

Private rooms at every table, group gatherings included

Moyeon, this Gongdeok beef restaurant, has every seat set up as a private room. You can even close the door, so it was wonderful to dine in such a private atmosphere. There are also group rooms, which seem perfect for gatherings.

What comes with the lunch set: pot rice and side dishes

They first brought out the rice pot and side dishes included in the Moyeon lunch set. The rice pot apparently uses the best domestic rice variety, and maybe that's why the aroma and sheen of the rice were on another level.

Perilla leaf pesto, barley ssamjang, and salted squid side dishes

Wrapping the meat with the lettuce leaves, kimchi, and pickles, along with perilla leaf pesto, barley ssamjang, and salted squid, made everything taste even better. The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was deep and clean, and nice to have hot as a finish.

And this abalone jang (soy-marinated abalone) was amazing. They told us to add the butter, abalone, and soy sauce to the rice to taste, then mix it all together. One bite in and, wait, how can this be this delicious?! The abalone was chewy, savory, and salty in just the right way — so good.

Sirloin grilled by the staff: how tender is it?

At Moyeon Mapo, the staff grilled the meat for us right at the table. You could tell from the marbling alone that this was truly good sirloin.

The sirloin was cooked exactly to the doneness I like. I also tried wrapping it in dried laver, which was a nice unexpected pairing. Since the meat itself was fresh and high quality, it was truly tender — a clear step above a regular beef restaurant.

They grilled everything so quickly that all we had to do was sit back and enjoy — a real find of a beef restaurant near Gongdeok Station.

Next, they grilled the charcoal seasoned beef beautifully for us. You could tell how good the meat was just from its color.

Once this charcoal-grilled seasoned beef is fully cooked, they place it on top of the seabeach sandwort salad that comes with it. It's tasty on its own, but even better eaten together. I visited with my mom, and the meat was so tender that even she, who has trouble chewing, was able to enjoy it fully.

Finally, we finished the meal off perfectly with nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea).

Is Moyeon Mapo worth it? Final thoughts

From the service to the taste, everything about Moyeon Mapo was satisfying! It was worth the wait. If you're looking for a truly great beef restaurant with private rooms in Mapo, I recommend Moyeon, a hanwoo dining spot.
