Dongchimi Makguksu with pollack sashimi and pork in Gangneung

In short

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is a cold noodle restaurant right across from Namhangjin Beach in Gangneung. The writer added pollack sashimi (₩3,000) to a bowl of dongchimi makguksu and ordered a small boiled pork, finding the pork noticeably better once topped with pollack sashimi. Having to pay extra for the pollack sashimi was a minor letdown, but the beachfront location made for an easy walk to the water right after eating.

What is Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch?

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu first opened in 1976 in Jumunjin-eup. Its first branch, the Namhangjin location, opened in 1998~ It was remodeled and reopened in 2015, then rebuilt in a new building and reopened again in 2023.

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu sits right in front of Namhangjin Beach! You can park in the lot in front of the building, and there's also parking across the street at the Namhangjin Beach lot! If there's a wait, register on CatchTable at the entrance!

Inside the restaurant and the seating

Walking inside, the space was just as spacious and clean as it looked from outside. There's a range of seating, from 4-tops to group tables to 2-tops~

The menu, and whether pollack sashimi is included

One thing I loved about Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is that the young radish greens, baek-kimchi, radish and pork are all domestically sourced! The menu is just three items — dongchimi makguksu, pollack sashimi makguksu, and boiled pork~ If you order dongchimi makguksu, pollack sashimi (₩3,000) isn't included, so you have to add it!

How the restaurant says to eat makguksu

  • Dongchimi makguksu: add three ladles of the broth, then mustard, vinegar, sugar and perilla oil to taste
  • Pollack sashimi makguksu: add one ladle of dongchimi broth plus the seasoning sauce and perilla oil, then mustard, vinegar and sugar to taste~

One dongchimi makguksu, pollack sashimi added, and a small boiled pork

What I ordered: one dongchimi makguksu, a plate of pollack sashimi, and a small boiled pork~ Along with the order came three kinds of banchan (side dishes) — young radish greens, baek-kimchi, and radish~~ For the boiled pork there was ssamjang, salted shrimp, garlic, chili and lettuce.

The main event, dongchimi makguksu, arrives!!! Two big chunks of kimchi sat in the bowl, with a layer of icy slush floating on top.

Following the restaurant's method, I added dongchimi broth to the noodles, then perilla oil and sugar since I personally like those, and it was delicious!

And then, the small boiled pork arrives!

A small plate of lean-cut boiled pork

This boiled pork seems like it'd please anyone who loves lean meat~ To eat it at its best, I added pollack sashimi (₩3,000)!

A plate of the additional pollack sashimi order

The first bite I had plain with kimchi and garlic, and from the second bite on I topped it with pollack sashimi — it was definitely better eaten with the pollack sashimi!

What I found lacking, and Namhangjin Beach

Pollack sashimi goes really well not just with the boiled pork but with the dongchimi makguksu too!!! Personally, the one thing I found a bit disappointing — I first tried dongchimi makguksu at Baekchon Makguksu in Goseong, and this was my second time trying it at Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu — was having to pay extra for the pollack sashimi. Other than that, I really enjoyed the dongchimi makguksu!

Namhangjin Beach is right in front, so it's a great spot to eat and then go check out the beach~~ There are even chairs set up at Namhangjin Beach, perfect for sitting and looking out at the sea!
