Lamb chop charcoal grill restaurant near Hapjeong Station

In short

Gukjeyangsik is a lamb charcoal-grill restaurant a 4-minute walk from Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. The signature charcoal set — shoulder rack, lamb sirloin, grilled beansprout stir-fry, tacos and mixed vegetables — is cooked tableside by staff over charcoal using only young lamb, so there's rich juice with no gamey smell. Lamb charcoal-grill table setting at Gukjeyangsik near Hapjeong Station

I went to Hapjeong-dong for the first time in a while and ended up eating some really good lamb chops. I've always liked lamb, so this time I wanted to try a proper charcoal grill, and while searching around I found Gukjeyangsik (국제양식)!!

It's only a 4-minute walk from Hapjeong Station, so access is really good, and there's a ground-level parking lot behind the building — I drove and had no trouble parking, which was great. And on top of that, the interior is so pretty and clean that I immediately thought it'd make a great Hapjeong date spot.

I went on a weekday evening and figured it might be fully booked, so I made a Naver reservation ahead of time — if I hadn't, I probably wouldn't have gotten a seat haha. It's a popular place, so I'd definitely recommend reserving before you go :)

What's the atmosphere like inside?

The interior really impressed me too. Soft lighting and a neatly arranged space make it feel comfortable for conversation rather than the loud, chaotic vibe of a typical BBQ joint. So if you're looking for a Hapjeong date spot, this is one I'd recommend right away haha. It's also perfect for a slightly special meal — a birthday or anniversary — when you want both the food and the atmosphere to be on point.

A lot of celebrities have apparently visited and left signatures here haha.

Depending on your group size, you can enjoy the lamb in a different kind of atmosphere — a nice Hapjeong Station restaurant recommendation.

Even the reserved name on the table — such a thoughtful touch

When I got to my seat, my name was already written on the table as the reservation holder, which made me feel taken care of from the very start haha.

The staff were really kind too, checking in throughout the meal to make sure everything was comfortable. When looking for a good restaurant near Hapjeong, taste matters, but this kind of attentive service is what really sticks in your memory haha.

The signature charcoal set is packed with variety

What we ordered that day was the signature charcoal set. It comes with shoulder rack and lamb sirloin, along with grilled beansprout stir-fry, tacos, and mixed vegetables, so it's plenty for two people to enjoy a variety of dishes. They only use young lamb sourced from clean Australian farms, so apparently it's free of the usual gamey smell and even more tender :)

They started by grilling the shoulder rack and the vegetable garnish first. Watching it happen right in front of us made the whole thing more delicious and fun.

Mixed vegetables including king oyster mushroom, garlic, and shishito peppers

Eek, king oyster mushrooms, garlic, shishito peppers, onion, green onion, zucchini, even pineapple — feels like all my favorite vegetables showed up at once?!?!

A plate of grilled beansprout stir-fry served first

While the lamb was grilling, they brought out the beansprout stir-fry first — the crunchy texture was so good and it really worked up an appetite for the lamb to come haha.

What I liked most about Gukjeyangsik was that the staff grill the lamb chops for you directly. Meat can taste completely different depending on the timing of the grilling, but since the staff watched and adjusted as they cooked, I just got to sit back, chat, and eat — so convenient haha.

The quality of the lamb chops looked great too, and since they only use young lamb, there really was barely any gamey smell and the juices stayed intact — very satisfying. Browned on the outside, moist on the inside — I kept reaching for more with every bite :)

The first cut was the shoulder rack, and they suggested dipping the first piece in Maldon salt to really taste the meat's natural flavor.

After that, you're free to pair it however you like — having so many ways to enjoy it made the meal even better haha.

Next up was the lamb sirloin, cut nice and thick. Compared to the shoulder rack, it had a heartier texture — and honestly, this one was also amazing ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

They kindly let us know that if it started feeling too rich, dipping it in soy sauce would help haha.

Zero-sugar cola served alongside the lamb chops

Pairing it with zero-sugar cola cut through any richness perfectly. I was driving so I stuck to soft drinks, but they have beer, sake, whiskey, and highballs on the menu, so if you're free to drink, it'd pair well too haha.

Lamb with tacos

Once we'd worked through the two cuts of lamb and started feeling a bit full, the staff grilled tortillas and made us tacos!

You top the charcoal-grilled lamb on the tortilla with tomato salsa and sour cream to taste!

I piled both toppings on generously haha. Eating lamb chops alone the whole time could get a bit monotonous, but being able to add the beansprout stir-fry and mixed vegetables, plus wrapping the lamb in a taco, kept things varied from start to finish. A set like this, where you get to enjoy so many combinations instead of just one dish, really is packed with value haha.

Dessert: house-made tiramisu

Hapjeong lamb chops I'm already craving again

The table at Gukjeyangsik after finishing the meal

Visiting in person, I finally understood why Gukjeyangsik is so well known. Having good-quality lamb chops grilled for us by the staff made it effortless to enjoy, and the signature charcoal set was packed with variety — very satisfying for two people!!

It matched perfectly with what I was hoping for — a proper lamb meal in Hapjeong-dong after a long time +_+ Next time I'm in Hapjeong, I'd love to come back. It's a Hapjeong Station restaurant memorable enough that I want to recommend it to friends who love lamb chops haha.
