Korean restaurant near Daegu Shinsegae for two: Hyangtaek rice bowls

In short

Hyangtaek is a tidy Korean restaurant in Dong-gu, Daegu, a 5-minute walk from Exit 2 of Dongdaegu Station. Before a movie at Megabox in Daegu Shinsegae, two diners ordered one dish each — samchi gondeure bap (mackerel with gondeure herb rice) at 14,000 won and gaji doenjang deopbap (eggplant soybean paste rice bowl) at 13,000 won — and ate them with gopchang gim (crisp seasoned laver), gungchae (seasoned lettuce stem) and salted octopus. Even someone who dislikes eggplant enjoyed Hyangtaek's eggplant doenjang bowl, and one dish each was more than filling for two.

Today I'm introducing the place I've been back to again, and again, and again — I've genuinely lost count of how many times — my go-to Korean restaurant, Hyangtaek :)

This wasn't my first visit to Hyangtaek — I've been back so many times I've lost count :) The location is just too good, so it's always the first place that comes to mind when I'm meeting a friend near Dongdaegu Station or want a clean, proper meal. The prices aren't a burden either (low ₩10,000s), and the food always comes out so neatly plated that it's never a one-time visit — I just keep coming back!

This time, too, I came here for a satisfying meal before watching a movie at Shinsegae Megabox Daegu 😀

This time we visited as two and ordered the mackerel gondeure rice bowl and the eggplant doenjang rice bowl. Ordering one dish each for two people gives a pretty generous amount, so we ate until we were full :)

I've already tried everything on the menu here, and the one I recommend the most is the eggplant doenjang rice bowl!!! I'm someone who hates eggplant more than any other vegetable in the world, ugh, but the eggplant in Hyangtaek's eggplant doenjang rice bowl is one I can genuinely enjoy.

Hyangtaek's side dishes: gopchang gim, gungchae and salted octopus

At Hyangtaek, what I personally love as much as the main dishes is the side dishes that come standard. The usual basic banchan are gungchae (stem lettuce), salted octopus, and gopchang-gim (seasoned laver) to wrap the rice in. Maybe it's because the dishes holding the banchan are so pretty, but everything feels really tidy overall :)

The gungchae has a crunchy texture, so it's great to eat in between bites of rice, and the salted squid... need I say more? Eaten with warm rice, it just disappears in seconds >< None of the side dishes are especially flashy, but they're the kind you keep reaching for, served in a clean, neat way — I loved that.

How to eat Hyangtaek's mackerel gondeure rice and eggplant doenjang bowl in 3 steps

Ta-da! Here's the mackerel gondeure rice and eggplant doenjang rice bowl I ordered. The mackerel gondeure rice comes with soy sauce, and the eggplant doenjang bowl comes with kelp vinegar, just like mazesoba!

I followed the 'How to enjoy Hyangtaek' guide on the table :)

1. Mix it all together evenly (the eggplant is so soft that just gently mashing it with a spoon mixes it right in)

2. Wrap it in the seasoned laver

3. Add a bit of salted octopus on top. I followed the steps one by one, and the seasoning really comes together perfectly!

To go into a bit more detail on the flavor, the soft eggplant combined with the savory doenjang base makes for a really great pairing with rice :) The eggplant is cooked down until soft, so it mixes easily with the rice, and while the mackerel gondeure rice is on the lighter, cleaner side, the eggplant doenjang bowl has a richer flavor — the two together made a great combination for the table~!

The portions aren't skimpy either, so eating it this way between two people ends up surprisingly filling.

Table at Hyangtaek after finishing the meal

Is Hyangtaek worth a stop before a movie at Daegu Shinsegae?

One reason I've visited Hyangtaek so many times is that you get a filling, quality meal at a reasonable price. These days, eating out for even one meal can get surprisingly expensive at a lot of places, but Hyangtaek's prices are pretty reasonable overall for a neat, proper Korean table — so it's easy to visit without feeling burdened~! Highly recommend it if you're looking for a good Korean restaurant near Dongdaegu Station or a place to eat near Shinsegae Department Store Daegu!!!

Recommended for anyone who loves tidy, well-plated Korean food, wants a no-fuss meal near Dongdaegu Station, or is looking for a place where two people can eat until they're full.
