Eggplant doenjang rice bowl at Hyangtaek, a Daegu set-meal restaurant
In short
Hyangtaek (향택 본점) is a one-person Korean set-meal restaurant in an alley by Dongdaegu Station Exit 2, across from Shinsegae Department Store in Dong-gu, Daegu. The writer ordered samchi gondeurebap (grilled mackerel over gondeure herb rice) and gaji doenjang deopbap (eggplant doenjang rice bowl), ate each plain first, then stirred in a little of the special sauce and kelp vinegar to get a second flavor from the same bowl. With gopchang gim (thick roasted seaweed) wrapped around bibim jeotgal (seasoned salted seafood), Hyangtaek makes a tidy, filling meal for one.

Here's my review of Hyangtaek, a well-known restaurant where you can fill up with a neat, tidy one-person meal set! It's tucked in the alley across from Dongdaegu Station exit 2 and Shinsegae Department Store, so it's easy to get to, and it's popular for both dates and solo dining. Both the visuals and the taste totally satisfied me, so I can confidently recommend it. Here's my honest review. 💕

A house in an alley: what Hyangtaek looks like from outside

It was tucked inside an alley. Hyangtaek sits on the first floor of a house building!

There's a waiting notice posted on the door, and a tabling kiosk near the entrance so you can register and wait comfortably if there's a line!
Bar seating for solo diners: inside Hyangtaek

The interior was cozy with wood-tone decor, equipped with a bar table (dachi seat) perfect for solo dining as well as tables for 2–4 people. The spacing between tables was generous, so I could eat comfortably.

Every table has utensils and a menu set out. On one side of the restaurant, disposable aprons and wet wipes were available for convenient use.

There was a sign on the table titled 'How to Enjoy Hyangtaek Deliciously.' I followed it and it really did taste better!😊
What comes with a Hyangtaek set meal

Every table has a menu on it.

The basic table setting comes with warm doenjang (soybean paste) soup and neat side dishes (gopchang gim, bibim jeotgal, jangajji).
✔️ What I ordered ✔️ [Samchi gondeurebap] [Gaji doenjang deopbap]

My order arrived. Such a clean-looking table setting!😋
Samchi gondeurebap: add the special sauce little by little

Samchi gondeurebap is Hyangtaek's signature dish, with golden-grilled domestic mackerel served over gondeure (dried mountain vegetable) rice. As instructed on the sign, I tore it thin and mixed it well with the rice — the savory mackerel and the fragrant gondeure added rich umami.

This is the special sauce for the samchi gondeurebap. If you add it all at once it can get too salty, so add it little by little and adjust to taste. It was fine without any sauce too, but adding a bit partway through and mixing it in gave the dish a completely different flavor — I loved it.

Partway through, I tried adding bibim jeotgal and wrapping it in gopchang gim — the flavor combination was really appealing.
Gaji doenjang deopbap: how kelp vinegar changes the taste

Gaji doenjang deopbap is a rice bowl with prettily scored, grilled eggplant, a savory special doenjang sauce, and thinly sliced chives. The soft eggplant texture and salty doenjang sauce went well with the rice.

This is the special sauce for the gaji doenjang deopbap: a kelp vinegar rich in umami. I'd recommend eating it plain at first, then mixing in the kelp vinegar little by little partway through — the umami deepens and you get a whole different, distinct flavor!

Partway through, I tried adding bibim jeotgal and wrapping it in gopchang gim — the flavor combination was really appealing.
