In short

Ito is a casual Japanese-style izakaya in a basement in Gwangjin, Seoul, a three-minute walk from Exit 2 of Konkuk University Station. Casual Japanese vibes near Konkuk University Station A fresh assorted sashimi & mille-feuille nabe spot

My husband said he hadn't had a good sit-down sashimi and a drink in a while, so we headed out to Konkuk after work (he needs his fish regularly, haha). I'd had my eye on Ito, an izakaya near Konkuk University Station, for a while — great for a casual date! Relaxed Japanese vibe, love it!!!

How to get to Ito from Konkuk University Station

Ito is only about a 3-minute walk from Exit 2 of Konkuk University Station, so the access alone is really convenient. It's a basement spot, so the izakaya feeling hits the moment you start down the stairs haha.

Inside Ito: what are the partitioned seats like?

Inside, the seats are separated by partitions — not full rooms, but it still felt private. Pure Japanese mood~~

The dim lighting was comfortable~ great for talking freely without worrying about the next table.

There were already people on a first meeting at the table next to us, haha. I thought, 'ah, that makes sense.' It felt like a comfortable, no-pressure spot to enjoy with guy or girl friends too. Konkuk University Station, street of youth~~

Assorted sashimi, 39,000 won: how does the aged sashimi taste?

I was curious about Ito's specially aged, seasonal sashimi, so we ordered it first. Assorted sashimi plus mille-feuille nabe together came to ₩63,000.

So glossy it looked shiny... arranged neatly and colorfully on the plate, it looked great just to look at.

A clean, subtle ocean scent rose up gently.

A piece of sashimi before dipping in soy sauce

I picked up a piece and dipped it lightly in soy sauce — from the first bite it melted softly away.

The shrimp meat also had a rich, melting texture...

Cross-section of chewy aged sashimi

The signature chewiness of aged sashimi was there but it wasn't tough at all — soft to bite through.

Sashimi served with wasabi and soy sauce

Each fish had a different texture, so switching between them was surprisingly fun. The wasabi wasn't overdone and the soy sauce wasn't too salty, so the sashimi's own flavor came through clearly.

Clean-tasting white fish sashimi

Personally, I liked the white fish especially — clean and good.

If you like sashimi, or want to enjoy some raw fish casually with a drink, this would be totally your style.

Table at Ito with a Japanese izakaya mood

Making up for the unfinished business from a Tokyo trip, at a Japanese izakaya here in Korea, haha.

Mille-feuille nabe, 26,000 won: a clear, light broth

Couldn't miss Ito's mille-feuille nabe, packed tight with all kinds of vegetables and beef delivered that same day. The layered veggie-and-meat visual is insane..

Ito's mille-feuille nabe packed with vegetables and beef

Napa cabbage and beef came out stacked layer upon layer, so visually we were already halfway sold before eating. Once it started boiling, a savory broth scent spread gently through the air.

I tried a spoonful of the broth and it was clearer and lighter than I expected. The fragrant perilla leaf scent and the pepper sprinkled on the meat made a really nice aroma.

The cabbage was crisp yet softly cooked, and the beef was thinly sliced with a tender, delicate texture.

It wasn't heavy or over-seasoned, so it definitely felt like a healthy meal. Alternating between the veggies and meat, I never got tired of it and kept reaching in. Personally I liked it enough to finish off even the broth.

Is Ito a good date or first-meeting izakaya in Gwangjin?

What I liked best about Ito was being able to talk comfortably over the meal thanks to the partitioned seats. The sashimi was clean and the nabe felt healthy, making for an easy, low-pressure dinner.

With good access from Konkuk University Station and a casual atmosphere, it seems perfect for a first meeting or a light date. If you're looking for an izakaya near Konkuk University Station for a date, or a place to casually enjoy sashimi and nabe, Ito ♥︎
