Konkuk weekday date dinner: meat-loaded, beef intestine bowls, Hekbap

In short

Hekbap Konkuk University Main Branch is a home-style rice bowl and ramen restaurant on Neungdong-ro near Konkuk University Station in Gwangjin, Seoul, sitting on the second floor between Konkuk University, Sejong University and Common Ground with about 80 seats. On a weekday evening date, the order was the meat-loaded rice bowl set, which came with udon and two pieces of karaage fried chicken, and the Korean beef intestine (daechang) rice bowl, served with clear broth and two honey-soaked rice cakes. If you like beef intestine, take the daechang bowl with wasabi at Hekbap; if you want a sweet-savory bowl, the meat-loaded rice bowl is the one.

Self-ordering at the table, with staff serving the food

You can order and pay at the table, and there's a receipt review event too, so keep that in mind. Ordering and paying are self-service, but staff bring the food directly to your table, which makes this Konkuk Station restaurant really convenient. Personally, I'd love to try the spicy Western-style pork cutlet I saw on the tablet menu 🔥

Ordering the meat-loaded rice bowl set and the Korean beef intestine bowl

At Hekbap Konkuk University Main Branch, each dish comes neatly arranged on its own tray, which makes it very easy to eat separately. There were so many menu options, but after much deliberation we ordered the meat-loaded rice bowl set and the Korean beef large intestine rice bowl!

The set comes with udon and two pieces of fried chicken, so ordering one as a set seems like a good, cost-effective way to eat.

If you don't order the set, you get broth instead of udon, along with two pieces of honey-glazed rice cake as a default. The crispy texture of the rice cake soaked in sweet honey makes for a nice light dessert.

What does Hekbap's meat-loaded rice bowl taste like?

The meat-loaded rice bowl is a Konkuk Station specialty where the meat is pan-seared at 200°C the moment you order. There's so much meat you can barely see the rice, and the sweetness of the green onion and onion cuts through the richness of the meat nicely. Finely chopped king oyster mushrooms are mixed in too, adding different textures. It's a dish with an appealing sweet-savory flavor, so I'd recommend ordering it if you're visiting with kids.

Korean beef intestine rice bowl, best eaten with wasabi

I confidently recommend the Korean beef large intestine rice bowl to anyone who loves large intestine. There are so many menu options, but if you're a large intestine fan, trust me and order this one 🤭 The combination of beef intestine grilled in sauce, a golden egg yolk, and sharp onion works really well together. Adding a little wasabi from the self-service bar especially helps cut through the richness of the intestine and makes it even tastier. I thought the portion looked small at first, but after one bite it was so delicious that thought disappeared completely!
