Boneless dakbokkeum with dropped noodles at Yesan Market: Sijang

In short

Sijang Dakbokkeum is a single-menu shishito pepper chicken stall inside Yesan Market (예산시장) in Chungnam, near Gate 4. The boneless version costs ₩25,000, with dropped noodles (glass noodles) and sausage added for takeout, ordered via a Kakao Talk alert while browsing the market. I visited Yesan and stopped by the famous Yesan Market, the one with Baek Jong-won's touch on it~ I looked around the market and tried Sijang Dakbokkeum too. It was great for taking out before heading back to my lodging, and the portion was bigger than I expected and tasted pretty good — I was satisfied!

Location and parking for Sijang Dakbokkeum

Sijang Dakbokkeum is located inside Yesan Market~ Since it's a space packed with many restaurants and stalls together, it can be a little confusing to find on your first visit, but coming in from the Gate 4 direction makes it much easier to spot!

Passage and shops toward Gate 4 inside Yesan Market

Once you spot the green sign, that's Sijang Dakbokkeum~ There are all kinds of shops around it, so if you take your time browsing, you'll find it pretty quickly.

There's no dedicated parking space right in front of the store, so you'll need to use a nearby public parking lot~ If you're driving, it's more convenient to check parking spots ahead of time before you visit.

Are there seats in the store?

Interior of Sijang Dakbokkeum, mostly a cooking space

Sijang Dakbokkeum isn't set up with tables or seats like a typical restaurant~ The space is mostly dedicated to cooking, so eating right there in the store isn't really an option.

Front of the store, run mainly for takeout with no seats

Instead, you take it to go or eat it at the market square (jangteo gwangjang) inside Yesan Market! I placed my order first and looked around the market while the food was being prepared~

Cooking starts right after you order, so it takes a bit of time until the food is ready~ While waiting, browsing the other famous stalls in the market makes the time fly by faster than you'd think!

When the food was done, I got a Kakao Talk alert, which was really convenient~ I could just go pick it up when notified instead of standing around waiting in front of the store. So if you're looking for a Splash Resom takeout meal, you could order ahead, browse the market, then go pick it up.

Menu and topping prices

The menu was really simple~ They sell just one dish, which actually made choosing easy! Shishito pepper dakbokkeum is ₩25,000, and you can choose bone-in or boneless, with a variety of extra toppings available too~

  • Extra shishito peppers ₩2,000
  • Mozzarella cheese ₩3,000
  • Dropped noodles (glass noodles) ₩2,000
  • Sausage ₩2,000
  • Quail eggs ₩2,000

After some thought, I ordered boneless and added sausage and dropped noodles~ I usually like adding extra sides, so I threw in a few things, and it turned out to be a great call! I liked that I could pick and choose exactly which toppings to add.

What I ordered was boneless shishito pepper dakbokkeum with sausage and dropped noodles added~ Cooking started right after I ordered, and after a short wait, I got the Kakao Talk alert and picked up the food! I looked around the market while waiting. Once it was ready, I could just grab it and eat right away, which was convenient!

Opening up the takeout box, it looked pretty appetizing right away! Overall it had a jjimdak (braised chicken) kind of vibe, with the sauce nicely soaked in — I thought it would be really good eaten together with rice~

The first thing I noticed was how generous the portion looked! Being boneless made it easy to eat, and the chicken wasn't dry at all — it was soft and pleasant to eat.

The sauce was spicy with a sweet edge, the kind of flavor that really grabs your appetite~ It wasn't just spicy — the sweetness came through too, so I kept reaching for more!

Eating the shishito peppers together with the chicken was especially good — the sauce's sweetness combined with the peppers' fragrant, slightly sharp flavor made a great combination~

It felt different from eating just the chicken alone, so I'd definitely recommend eating the shishito peppers together!

How were the dropped noodles and sausage add-ons?

And the dropped noodles I added!! This was a total cheat code~ The chewy texture went so well with the sauce that I kept alternating bites between it and the chicken.

Dropped noodles mixed into the sauce

The sausage was salty and paired well with the sauce too, and adding the extra sides made eating even more fun~ They don't sell rice at the store, so I bought instant rice separately at a convenience store~

Mixing rice into the sweet and spicy sauce — a total rice thief as expected! The sauce was so good that eating it with rice made the meal much heartier.

Overall it was great to bring along as a Splash Resom takeout meal, and being able to eat it right there in the market was also nice~ If you're looking for a Yesan Market restaurant, it's worth stopping by at least once~
