Today I'm bringing you a Deoksugung restaurant review!! This is a place I kept spotting while walking along Jeongdong-gil, and both the space and the food were so good that I rushed straight home to write this up 🏃‍♀️💨 The place I went to is Tanbaek, near Deoksugung! If you're looking for restaurants near Deoksugung or on Jeongdong-gil, please read to the end 😉✨

What kind of restaurant is Tanbaek?

Jeongdong-gil, where Tanbaek sits, is a special street at the heart of Seoul where history and culture still breathe — the site of a royal detached palace from the Joseon dynasty 👍 Even the name Tanbaek is meaningful: 탄 (坦/炭, meaning even-tempered/generous, or 'burnt'), 백 (白, meaning white, or 'to speak plainly') — together suggesting speaking honestly, without hiding anything. It's meant to convey a promise to serve honest food made with clean, good ingredients!

The interior at Tanbaek was seriously so good!! During demolition for the renovation, a fire exposed a wooden beam that had been burned in an old blaze — and instead of removing it, they preserved that charm and named the restaurant Tanbaek after the character for 'burnt.' Traditional sensibility with a modern touch makes for a clean yet special atmosphere 💕

  • 1st floor — bar-table seating, perfect for solo dining or a couple
  • 2nd floor — table seating good for groups of 3–4

It's a great choice as a Deoksugung restaurant, and it also fits perfectly into a Jeongdong-gil walking route or a Deoksugung Palace tour 🏛️

What we ordered for dinner at Tanbaek, and what it cost

Full table spread with warm pork jowl at Tanbaek

Warm pork (온제육), ₩19,000

Warm pork jowl is a pork dish served hot, and the clean, unfussy flavor was genuinely striking!! 😍 It wasn't overly seasoned — you could really taste the ingredients themselves, and it got better with every bite 🤤 Just like the name suggests, it felt honest and unhidden 😊

Tripe muchim (양무침), ₩9,000

Seasoned raw skate was a dish I'd never seen before, so I gave it a try! The fresh seasoning sauce and the skate itself were so tasty! And at ₩9,000, the price is quite reasonable too!

Kimchi dumplings (김치만두), ₩5,000

Two kimchi dumplings for ₩5,000 — I thought, is that a bit pricey? But the quality was so good!! 😲 They were packed with clean, well-made kimchi filling — nothing like the dumplings you buy at the store 🙌

Chamnamul herb salad (참나물샐러드), ₩2,000

The chamnamul (Korean wild herb) salad is only ₩2,000!! 😲 The fragrant herbs refreshed my palate perfectly between other dishes 🌿 It also comes as a side with the warm pork, but it was worth ordering an extra portion!

Apparently at lunchtime, Tanbaek is popular enough to draw a wait, with the signature dish being gomguksu (kalguksu, beef bone broth noodles) — next time I'll definitely come at lunch to try it 🍜!
