Korean food by Baegun Lake in Uiwang: Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch
Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch is a wood-fired fish Korean restaurant on Neungan-gil near Baegun Lake in Uiwang. On a cool autumn day, I finally made it back out to the area around Baegun Lake, Uiwang after a long while.

Walking around the lake, I got hungry before I knew it. Since I'd made the trip, I wanted a proper Korean meal at a real Baegun Lake restaurant. After some searching and deliberating, I found a place called Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo — literally, "the mackerel that went to the wood-fired oven."

Even from the outside, the place gave off serious Korean-restaurant vibes. No hesitation — straight in!
Hanok-style interior and the self-serve side dish bar
A clean atmosphere with convenient facilities

True to its reputation as a Baegun Lake restaurant, stepping inside hit me with a savory smell that got my appetite going right away. With hanok-style interior and a green view outside the windows, the whole meal felt relaxed and cozy.

As you'd expect from a proper Korean restaurant near Baegun Lake, the inside was clean and well organized overall.
Whenever any side dish ran low, I could just grab more myself — no need to worry about it. Being able to take as much as I wanted made the meal even more satisfying.

They're also running a Naver receipt review event — write a review and you get a free drink or alcoholic beverage, worth keeping in mind.
They have high chairs, too.

I spent a good while looking over the menu, but of course I had to try the signature dish here. So I placed my order.
What comes with the wood-fired mackerel, oily flounder and eel set
Wood-fired grilled fish and a wholesome spread

A little while later, the table in front of me was a sight that pulled a genuine gasp out of me.

Mackerel and oily flounder grilled over a wood fire, plus eel grilled to a golden brown.

Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside — these grilled fish were rice-thief material, no doubt about it.

The eel especially kept its distinctive richness without any fishy edge at all — I loved that.
Siraegi-braised mackerel: the dish I can't forget

The grilled fish was delicious, but the dish that moved me even more was the siraegi (dried radish greens) braised mackerel.

The spicy, punchy sauce soaked deep into the mackerel flesh — genuinely unforgettable.

The sauce was so good I mixed it into my rice, and that turned out to be a delicacy in its own right. Wood-fired grilled fish paired with spicy braised mackerel — that combination was simply the best.

Piling freshly cooked rice with a piece of grilled fish and some kimchi on top left me wanting for nothing.
The standard side dishes were all neat and tasty too.

Not overly seasoned, letting the ingredients' natural flavor shine, these sides paired wonderfully with the grilled fish.
And of course, the warm stone pot rice was a must.

Is Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo worth it after a Baegun Lake walk?
