I was down in Pohang and suddenly craved jokbal (Korean braised pig's trotters) for dinner, so I picked up takeout from Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch, which I'd seen recommended a lot as a Pohang jokbal takeout spot! Jokbal is such a great menu to eat comfortably at home too, so I order it for takeout or delivery pretty often — and Hwanggeum Jokbal comes with such a solid spread of extras beyond just the jokbal itself that it was perfect for setting up a whole table.

There's a big Hwanggeum Jokbal sign out front that catches your eye easily even just passing by. There's a bit of space in front to park briefly, so I called ahead to order and went to pick it up!

There was a sign outside saying you get a lotto with your order, and they really did give me an actual lotto coupon haha? Apparently if you win, you get 1/50 of the amount. Such a fun little event.

Dine-in tables at Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch

I didn't stay long since it was a takeout order, but there were tables set up for dine-in as well. I called ahead saying I'd arrive in 30 minutes, and they had everything neatly packed and ready right on time!

The menu had the basic wang jokbal (large trotters) plus set menus, and we ordered Set 2, the banban jokbal — half regular jokbal, half spicy jokbal, both front leg meat! (They said the front leg is the tastiest part haha)

Full takeout spread of the Hwanggeum Jokbal banban jokbal set

This is the whole takeout spread — I only ordered one jokbal set and wondered why there was so much, and it turned out they threw in gamjatang for free too...?? And even ramen noodles on top of that..!! This could not be a more perfect pairing for soju.

How does the banban jokbal (regular + spicy) taste?

Unpacked banban jokbal with regular and spicy jokbal

Once unpacked, it was a truly generous jokbal set. There were 4 of us eating, and between that and the raw fish we picked up on the way, we ate really well — though I think the portion itself was just huge to begin with!

Usually when you order jokbal, the meat is often just a thin layer on top of the bone, but Hwanggeum Jokbal was absolutely packed with meat! It was cut into bite-sized pieces too, perfect for wrapping right away haha.

The vegetables that came with it were super generous too. Usually with jokbal orders the lettuce for wraps always runs short, but Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch gave us plenty of lettuce.

The spicy jokbal wasn't too spicy and the sauce was genuinely delicious. The meat wasn't dry at all — it was clean and light — and the skin part had that chewy yet tender bite.

The color on this jokbal is just gorgeous haha. Wrapped in lettuce with onion and shredded radish on top, it was seriously an unbeatable, can't-go-wrong combo.

We also picked up some raw fish that's apparently famous among Pohang locals — ajimae bluefin makhoe (chopped raw fish) — and it was genuinely delicious too. Today's side dishes were on point...

This was my first time ordering from this jokbal place and I was a bit worried, but it turned out to be a choice I don't regret at all!

The free gamjatang and ramen noodles

Free gamjatang boiled with added ramen noodles

Eating jokbal is mostly meat-focused, so partway through you start craving some broth — and this warm gamjatang (potato and pork bone soup) was perfect for that. It came with instructions to boil it up, and once we added the ramen noodles they gave us and simmered it, it had 2 whole pork bones in it and honestly tasted like the kind of gamjatang you'd pay full price for 🫢.

I found Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch while searching for a jokbal takeout spot in Pohang, and between the neatly sliced jokbal and the gamjatang on the side, if you're looking for a place to pack jokbal back to your accommodation while traveling in Pohang, I'd recommend Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch!
