I really love jokbal, so I eat it often. But sometimes, instead of the usual chewy jokbal, I find myself craving cold jokbal that really wakes up my appetite. Recently, it was exactly one of those days, so I went to Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch (황금족발 장성점), a great jokbal spot in Jangseong-dong, Pohang, for the cold jokbal I love.

Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch near Doosan We've
This is a local favorite in Pohang near Doosan We've, and anyone who likes jokbal knows Hwanggeum Jokbal!! There is also a Ssangsa Branch, but I went to the Jangseong Branch because it is closer to home.

Hwanggeum Jokbal in Jangseong-dong also operates a dine-in restaurant, so it is nice for a meal at the restaurant or for having jokbal as an accompaniment to a drink. There are private rooms toward the back too, so it looks like a decent place for gatherings.

Menu board
Hwanggeum Jokbal, a great jokbal restaurant in Pohang, has a variety of dishes including king-size jokbal, cold jokbal, bossam (boiled pork wraps), garlic sauce jokbal, platter noodles, and rice balls. For reference, I got takeout that day and received a ₩3,000 discount.

For both dine-in and takeout, Hwanggeum Jokbal also gave me a lottery ticket issued by the restaurant. Do not miss your chance to be the lucky winner, either.

Cold jokbal takeout set
I ordered cold jokbal from Hwanggeum Jokbal, a Pohang local favorite known for its jokbal. I only ordered jokbal, but they packed in plenty of vegetables, seasoned radish, hangover soup, and more.

With the cold jokbal, the jokbal, cucumber, jellyfish, and sauce are all packed separately. Rather than arriving already mixed in sauce, you can add as much sauce as you like and mix it right before eating.

Here is the cold jokbal from Hwanggeum Jokbal, a local favorite in Pohang, plated up. Since it was packed without sauce, you can eat it as cold jokbal or simply as regular jokbal.

Thinly sliced jokbal with cucumber and jellyfish
Unlike regular warm jokbal, cold jokbal is sliced a little thinner. Regular warm jokbal is cut thickly, so you can enjoy jokbal's characteristic chewiness and tenderness,
but cold jokbal seems to be sliced thinner because it is eaten with cucumber and jellyfish.

If the jokbal is too thick, its own texture and flavor can come through too strongly. Since it is sliced thinly, the cucumber, jellyfish, and sauce all blend together naturally.

Tossed in sauce or eaten as wraps
At Hwanggeum Jokbal in Jangseong-dong, Pohang, I first soaked the jokbal well in the cold-jokbal sauce and left it for a moment so the flavor could really sink in. The tangy sauce with a pleasantly sharp kick coated the jokbal beautifully and really got my appetite going.

Eating it with cucumber and jellyfish gave me the chewy jokbal, crisp cucumber, and springy jellyfish all in one bite, each with a different texture. What a special treat!

Then I tried putting plain, unsauced jokbal on lettuce too. The chewy jokbal with crisp radish kimchi was delicious as well. With cold jokbal, you can toss it in the tangy sauce or enjoy it as a simple wrap like this, so one order of jokbal gives you two different flavors.

Complimentary bone hangover soup with jokbal
Hwanggeum Jokbal, recommended by locals as a great jokbal spot in Pohang, also serves bone hangover soup with jokbal orders. This bone hangover soup is another special treat. It has a spicy, warming flavor that goes nicely with jokbal, so it was very satisfying for something served complimentary.

On a day when you are craving something a little more special than usual, I think you should try the cold jokbal at Hwanggeum Jokbal, a Pohang jokbal restaurant that will really get your appetite going.
