Jukdo Market sashimi restaurant in Pohang: abalone mulhoe 4-person set

In short

Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center is a 50-year-old snow crab and sashimi restaurant at Jukdo Market in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. A family of four ordered the Bakdal Special 4-person set, which ran from starters like steamed cod, blanched squid, sushi and nakji tangtangi (chopped raw octopus) through assorted sashimi, abalone mulhoe (chilled raw fish soup), bakdal snow crab shelled in the kitchen, and a finish of spicy fish stew with ramyeon. For a day when you can't give up crab, sashimi or mulhoe, the Bakdal Special set covers all three in one course.

Snow crab is one of the must-eat foods when you travel to Pohang! 🦀 Once you step into Jukdo Market, there are so many crab and sashimi restaurants that it's hard to decide where to go. Out of all those options, I chose Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center.

Inside Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center at Jukdo Market

Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center is a snow crab and sashimi restaurant located in Jukdo Market, known as the largest fish market on the east coast. It's said to carry on a 50-year tradition.

Walking in, the first thing I noticed was the spacious interior. At sashimi restaurants you sometimes get a strong fishy smell or a place that feels less than clean, but here the space felt tidy and hygienic when I visited. Thanks to that, I could enjoy the whole meal without any discomfort!

What starters come with the Bakdal Special 4-person set?

Not long after we sat down, the course started arriving. Whoa... the spread was so generous! Steamed cod, boiled squid, sushi, conch, sea squirt, and spicy pufferfish-skin salad came out one by one, until the plates barely fit on the table.

Chewy octopus tartare paired with corn cheese!

Even before the crab arrived, everyone's chopsticks were already busy haha. If you like enjoying a variety of side dishes alongside sashimi, this would be very satisfying. From seafood to sushi to side dishes, there was so much variety it was fun to taste a little of everything.

How were the assorted sashimi and abalone mulhoe?

The assorted sashimi at Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center came out sliced thick and beautifully arranged. Thick-cut sashimi is exactly my style, so I loved it! It was mostly white fish, and one bite had a firm, springy texture. The thickness gave it a satisfying chew and let the clean flavor of the fish come through.

Since I was in Pohang, I really wanted to try mulhoe, and it turned out the course included abalone mulhoe! Pohang means mulhoe, right? 🤭

One sip of the broth was tangy and sweet, the kind of flavor that gets your appetite going. I liked that the broth wasn't overly sweet, and the umami of the chojang (vinegared chili paste) blended in nicely. I love mulhoe broth, so my spoon kept going back for more haha.

The tangy flavor cleansed the palate and paired well with the seafood too. Sometimes you come for the Jukdo Market crab but also crave sashimi and mulhoe on the same day! At Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center, several dishes come together in one course, so you don't have to agonize over what else to order.

Does the bakdal snow crab arrive already shelled?

And then the long-awaited bakdal crab arrived! I thought I'd have to cut through the shell with scissors myself, but the kitchen had already shelled it for easy eating. They peeled the leg shells and laid the meat out neatly, which was so convenient. Thanks to that, I could focus on eating the crab instead of getting fishy-smelling hands or wrestling with shells. On top of that, clams and shrimp came as a free extra, making the crab set look even more generous.

One bite of the crab meat brought a chewy texture along with a subtle sweetness. Once I started, my hand kept reaching for more!

Even without any seasoning, the meat itself had a salty, oceanic flavor, and I personally liked that it wasn't too salty — just right. So I ate the crab meat plain without dipping it in soy sauce.

The clean, natural sweetness really came through, which made it even more delicious. A moment where you understand exactly why it's introduced as a top crab restaurant in Pohang!!

Crab jang mixed into rice

We separately ordered crab jang (marinated raw crab) so we could mix it into rice!

Spicy fish stew served at the end of the course

Finishing the course with spicy fish stew and ramyeon

The last stage of the Bakdal Special course at Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center was spicy fish stew. By this point we were already full, but the moment that hot, spicy broth showed up, our chopsticks and spoons started moving again haha. The broth had a strong, spicy kick that I really liked.

The real, true finale!! Cooking ramyeon in the broth made with crab legs and clams. Even though we were full, it was the kind of broth you keep sipping anyway! After a hearty meal of crab, sashimi, and mulhoe, finishing with warm stew and spicy ramyeon really completed the bakdal crab course.

Who is the Bakdal Special 4-person set best for?

There are days in Pohang when you want crab but also can't give up sashimi and mulhoe. At Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center, I loved being able to enjoy a variety of seafood, assorted sashimi, mulhoe, bakdal crab, and stew all in one sitting.

  • People who love a generous spread of side dishes
  • People who want their crab pre-shelled for easy eating
  • Families who want to taste crab, sashimi, and mulhoe all at one table

On this visit, I ate well and left completely full. If you're planning to visit Jukdo Market in Pohang, try enjoying crab and sashimi together at Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center! 🦀
