Pohang jokbal restaurant with free gamjatang: Hwanggeum Jokbal

I went on a weekend trip to Pohang and suddenly craved jokbal (braised pig's trotters) for dinner — it had been a while! So I checked out a famous jokbal restaurant in Jangseong-dong 😊

Where is Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch, and its hours and parking

Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch is located at 27 Beopwon-ro25beon-gil, 1-dong, 1st floor, unit 1, Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. It's open daily from 15:30 to 23:00, and parking is free.

The Hwanggeum Jokbal sign was easy to spot! Parking was convenient too since there were plenty of spots nearby. Let's head inside.

What we ordered at Hwanggeum Jokbal and what it cost

The jokbal menu at Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch was so varied it was hard to choose. Everything looked delicious.

• King-size jokbal (front leg, large) ₩42,000
• Jaengban guksu (noodle platter) ₩8,000
• Rice balls ₩3,000

It finally arrived!!

It looked so appetizing just to look at, and the portion seemed really generous!

+) Unlike other places, here they give you gamjatang (pork bone potato stew) for free when you order jokbal.

A variety of wrap vegetables plus pickled radish and pickled onion were also prepared for wrapping the jokbal.

How does the jokbal taste?

King-size jokbal, large front leg: 42,000 won

At Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch, the jokbal is divided into front leg and back leg. The back leg is more lean meat, and they said the front leg is a bit more tender, so that's what I ordered! They use 100% domestic chilled pork, and maybe that's why — there was zero gamey smell, and the texture was incredibly soft and chewy. So good.

It's tasty even plain, but wrapped with ssamjang and vegetables it's basically a rice thief hahaha. Ugh, one bowl of rice gone in no time.

The free gamjatang that comes with every jokbal order

This was my first time seeing gamjatang served with jokbal. Isn't that basically cheating? The moment I tasted it, it was so spicy and refreshing that even without drinking, it felt like the perfect hangover cure and perfect drinking snack! I thought a free side dish might be lower quality, but not at all — it was better than a lot of gamjatang sold as a standalone dish.

Rice balls: 3,000 won

Simple, classic flying fish roe rice balls, but so nutty and delicious. Eaten with jokbal, it's a perfect match. How could it not be tasty!!

Jaengban guksu cold noodle platter: 8,000 won

Unlike typical jaengban guksu, the noodles here are naengmyeon-style, so they're chewier and tangier — really tasty. They also loaded it with lettuce and cabbage, and mixing it all together to wrap with jokbal is a heavenly combo 👍 Jokbal + jaengban guksu + rice balls is a guaranteed winning combo.

Is Hwanggeum Jokbal Jangseong Branch worth a stop in Pohang?

• If you're looking for a Pohang restaurant, a Pohang jokbal restaurant, a Pohang bossam restaurant, jokbal in Jangseong-dong, cold jokbal in Pohang, or a local Pohang favorite, I highly recommend this place!!
• Unlike other jokbal restaurants, this one uses domestic raw jokbal made from chilled meat, giving it an incredibly chewy, tender texture and — most importantly — no gamey smell at all, which made it so delicious.
• Ordering jokbal gets you free gamjatang too, making it perfect as a drinking snack, and on top of the variety of wrap vegetables, the jaengban guksu + rice ball combo I added on was also delicious. I heard takeout gets you a ₩2,000 discount!
