Table setting with stone-plate jjamppong at Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong

I stopped by Ulsan while traveling and went looking for a late lunch at "Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong," a well-known spot near Daewangam. This place stood out for its unique jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) served on a stone plate that stays hot until the last bite, paired with crispy handmade fried dishes.

Wall phrase reading 'even a bowl of jjamppong should be like Chanel'

A big phrase on the wall caught my eye — "Even a bowl of jjamppong should be like Chanel." I could really feel the owner's pride and care behind the food, and it got me excited before the dishes even arrived.

Sizzling stone jjamppong: how hot is spice level 1?

The stone-plate scorched rice jjamppong at Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong grabs your attention with steam rising and a sizzling boil right on the big stone plate. We chose spice level 1, and it was just pleasantly spicy. Mixing in the crunchy bean sprouts piled on top made them wilt a bit and deepened the broth's flavor.

Noodles with shrimp and whole squid in the dol jjamppong

Plump shrimp, the whole squid we added, and chewy squid rings — the seafood was genuinely generous, making it really fun to pick up along with the noodles!

Best of all, there's nutty scorched rice hiding at the bottom of the stone plate — scraping up the broth-soaked scorched rice was pure joy... 🥺

How the handmade dontang and chitang taste

Plate of handmade dontang and chitang topped with onion slices

This is a set of 100% handmade dontang (pork) and chitang (chicken)! Crispy on the outside and packed with meat inside, the texture was great.

Eating them with the thin onion slices on top cuts the richness nicely, and there were two sauces — sweet and spicy — perfect for dipping to your taste. Spicy dol jjamppong paired with sweet-salty crispy fried food... there's just no way this combo isn't delicious!

The best order for eating stone jjamppong

Noodles scooped into a bowl from the dol jjamppong
  • As soon as the food arrives, quickly mix the bean sprouts and noodles into the broth.
  • Use scissors to cut the noodles into bite-sized pieces.
  • Scoop the noodles and seafood into a bowl and taste them first.
  • After finishing the noodles, scrape up the savory scorched rice stuck to the bottom of the stone plate.
  • If there's broth left, grab free rice from the self-serve bar and mix it in for a clean finish.

Self-serve bar, free rice and dessert 😋

One of the real highlights of this place is the self-serve bar and dessert!

  • Self-serve bar: Pickled radish and onion are standard, plus tasty green onion kimchi, all neatly set out. And on top of that, rice is unlimited and free!

At the dessert corner, there was nostalgic yogurt floating in ice water and nutty barley candy set out as dessert!

A walk on Ilsan Beach after lunch

From the hearty, deep-flavored dol jjamppong to the crispy handmade dontang and chitang, plus unlimited rice and yogurt/barley candy dessert service — it was quite a meal!

We walked around Ilsan Beach for about 40 minutes afterward to manage our blood sugar haha. It was near sunset, so the sky was starting to turn golden and the seaside was so beautiful. If you're heading to Daewangam Park or Ilsan Beach in Ulsan and craving something refreshing and unique in Chinese food, definitely stop by Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong. Highly recommend!
