Busan tonkatsu with overflowing cheese at Myeonsikdang Pukyong Univ.

In short

Myeonsikdang Pukyong National University Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Nam-gu, Busan, serving ramen and tonkatsu. We chose tonkotsu ramen, mozzarella cheese katsu, and sides from the two-person set. Verdict: go for the thick, seriously cheese-filled tonkatsu.

I heard there was a restaurant near Kyungsung University–Pukyong National University Station where you can have ramen and tonkatsu together, so I went to Myeonsikdang Pukyong National University Branch (면식당 부경대점).

There were bar-table seats that looked convenient for dining alone, plus a good variety of two- and four-person tables. I visited around 7:30 p.m., and there were quite a few customers.

At Myeonsikdang Pukyong National University Branch, you can try a wide range of Japanese dishes, from ramen, soba, and udon to rice bowls and katsu.

Choosing the two-person set

For the two-person set, we ordered Shine Muscat ade, tonkotsu ramen, and mozzarella cheese katsu, then chose hire katsu and fire-grilled butadon as sides. We ordered the set, but paid extra to choose the menu items we wanted!!

You can choose the spice level for noodle dishes, so keep that in mind. They say the rice noodles taste spicier than the ramen. Dishes are generally prepared in order, but because cooking times and methods vary by menu item, food may be served in a different order.

Shine Muscat ade

Shine Muscat ade and tonkotsu ramen

I was surprised that the Shine Muscat ade was black, but it really did taste like grapes. It was sparkling water mixed with syrup!

Tonkotsu ramen

They give you a canned drink for writing a review, and every Monday they hold a drawing for a free one-person set meal voucher.

The tonkotsu ramen came topped with half an egg, one sheet of seaweed, loads of bean sprouts, sliced green onion, and one piece of chashu. If you love chashu, it would be nice to add more!

The noodles were thin somyeon-style noodles, and I loved that there were so many bean sprouts. The ramen broth was tasty too, with none of that off smell.

Fire-grilled butadon and hire katsu sides

The fire-grilled butadon side! It had a real smoky flame-grilled flavor. It came with shichimi chili seasoning, so it was spicy for me—I’m weak with spicy food.

This was the hire katsu we ordered as a side too! It was fried incredibly crisp. The restaurant is called Myeonsikdang, meaning a noodle restaurant, but personally, I thought the tonkatsu was seriously delicious.

Crispy hire katsu

It was thick and packed full of meat. Even though we ordered it as a side, it was proper tonkatsu, and I enjoyed it so much.

Mozzarella cheese katsu with thick cheese and meat

The mozzarella cheese katsu came with rice, cabbage salad, spicy tonkatsu sauce and regular tonkatsu sauce, salt, shichimi, and wasabi.

Wait, is it for real that this much cheese is overflowing...? There was seriously an amazing amount of cheese.

When you usually order cheese tonkatsu, it often has only cheese inside and the meat is really thin, so quite often I wonder whether it is cheese tonkatsu or just fried cheese. But Myeonsikdang Pukyong National University Branch had lots of cheese and thick meat inside too—this is what cheese tonkatsu should be! I enjoyed it so much.
