Gejeolsal sashimi platter with self-made sushi rice: Veteran Guwol

In short

Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch is a sashimi restaurant on Inha-ro 507beon-gil in Guwol-dong, Namdong, Incheon. Three people ordered a seasonal sashimi platter of flounder, salmon, gizzard shad, mullet and red seabream plus seafood ramyeon and self-mixed sushi rice, with grilled saury thrown in for free, at about ₩20,000 per person. A great-value spot to catch gizzard shad in season.

Cool autumn is on its way, and that's exactly when you need to keep your protein intake up, right? Today I'm bringing you a review of a great-value, great-tasting sashimi spot in Guwol-dong, Incheon — Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch — where I ate a seasonal sashimi platter.

Restaurant interior packed with customers on a weekday evening

Maybe because grilled prawns are in season these days, the place was already packed and buzzing even on a weekday evening! The inside was way roomier than it looked from outside, so I felt like I'd stumbled onto a hidden gem nobody else knew about.

As you can see in the photos, there's a sashimi platter with several kinds of fish, plus single-species options like live squid sashimi, flounder, or sea bass. Sides were solid too — house-made tempura, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), stews and ramyeon. They also had salt-grilled shrimp and gizzard shad sashimi to welcome the coming autumn, and for anyone who doesn't want to fuss over choices, there's a combo menu — like a couple's set — with sashimi platter, seafood, sushi, tempura and spicy fish stew all in one.

Ordering the seasonal sashimi platter for 3, about ₩20,000 per person

Basic table setting with seaweed soup and mini seasoned raw fish salad
Side dishes of ssamjang, washed kimchi, and fresh wasabi

I ordered the seasonal sashimi platter for 3, seafood ramyeon, sushi rice, and a zero-sugar cola. For a meal that fed three of us, it came out to about ₩20,000 per person — at a sashimi restaurant, that's got to count as great value, right?!!

It started with hot seaweed soup and a tiny seasoned raw fish salad, plus ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), washed kimchi, and fresh wasabi. Pollock roe and sauces to go with the sashimi came out after.

The mini seasoned raw fish salad was the perfect appetizer! I mixed it into the sweet-and-sour chojang sauce while waiting for the sashimi platter to arrive.

And then, the seasonal sashimi platter arrived!! From left in the photo: flounder, salmon, gizzard shad, mullet, and red seabream!!

The slices were cut nice and thick — just the perfect size to enjoy!

Sushi rice you mix yourself

The sushi rice I ordered also came out — you mold it yourself into whatever size you like. Since the sashimi was fresh and delicious, eating it with the sushi rice made every bite even more varied!!

Incheon gizzard shad sashimi

First I tried the long-sliced Incheon gizzard shad (jeoneo) dipped in the perfectly matched ssamjang — not a single bone, and the deep nutty flavor was so good. Incheon gizzard shad really is delicious right now.

Flounder, the nation's favorite sashimi fish, you've got to trust it. Dipped in chojang — you know that familiar flavor that hits just right? Chewy and sweet, the flounder was so good.

Mullet also goes well with chojang, but wrapping it in seaweed with a touch of wasabi-soy sauce was honestly an even better combo.

The salmon sashimi was, of course, delicious — goes without saying. I eat salmon often so I didn't expect much, but I was surprised at how good it was!

Putting salmon sashimi on top of a ball of sushi rice, then onion and sauce on top — suddenly I couldn't tell if I was at a neighborhood sashimi joint or an omakase place!!

Sushi rice on seaweed, topped with pollock roe, wasabi, and sashimi — also so good. Ordering the sushi rice really bumps up the flavor a whole level!

Grilled saury I didn't order, on the house

A grilled saury suddenly showed up, and when I said I hadn't ordered it, turns out it was on the house!!

Freshly grilled saury served on the house

It was even freshly grilled — steaming, crispy on the outside, nutty and savory — a perfect little change of pace from eating nothing but sashimi platter!

Finishing with seafood ramyeon

Finally, wrapping up with seafood ramyeon completed the whole Guwol-dong, Incheon sashimi restaurant course! The noodles were springy, and the broth loaded with clams was refreshing — the perfect ending after eating so much sashimi. Big, big recommend on the seafood ramyeon!!

It's already September, so now's the time to eat all the gizzard shad you can. Get tired of gizzard shad? Then in October it's shrimp season. No need to go far — I highly recommend Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch as your go-to sashimi restaurant in Guwol-dong.
