In short
Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, Gyeongnam. We enjoyed a black pork set, plentiful side dishes, and staff-grilled meat after easy underground parking. Verdict: a satisfying, family-friendly spot for tender pork in Sangnam-dong.

What is Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch in Changwon like?
Ever since moving recently, there have been weekdays when I just do not have the energy to make dinner. To recharge a little, we went out to Sangnam-dong for pork belly. There used to be just a few fixed pork-belly favorites among Changwon Sangnam-dong restaurants, but oh... so many even better places have opened lately.
Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch was said to be a hot Sangnam-dong pork-belly spot that makes you feel as though you are eating pork belly in Jeju, so we stopped by! Parking was easy, the meat and table spread were excellent, and the staff were incredibly kind.
A spacious underground parking lot and a Jeju atmosphere
Sangnam-dong meat restaurants rarely have parking this well set up, but Jeju Doldam has a fairly large, pleasant underground parking lot in the building. It was great to park downstairs comfortably and head straight into the restaurant.
Jeju Doldam in Sangnam-dong gives the impression of a Jeju pork-belly favorite brought right over, starting from the exterior! The dol hareubang stone grandfather statues and volcanic basalt at the entrance really create that Jeju feeling. The outdoor meat-aging refrigerator was packed with meat being stored and aged hygienically, making my mouth water even more and drawing me inside.
The interior was bright and very tidy, with décor that seemed to capture Jeju as well. The tables were set up for four people, and as befits a Sangnam-dong meat restaurant suited to company dinners, the space was large with plenty of tables.

Because the restaurant was so clean, another advantage of Jeju Doldam was that there was not a strong meat smell as soon as we walked in.
What black pork and meal dishes are available?
The menu included black pork five-layer pork belly, pork neck, and skirt meat, plus plenty of meal dishes such as fried rice, naengmyeon (cold noodles), Jjapagetti, and doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), so there was lots to enjoy. Personally, the set menu looked like a good value and an easy way to try several things.

A black pork set meal with our baby
Getting to enjoy black pork belly and pork neck in Sangnam-dong, Changwon—ohho... I was so happy. Our set meal arrived, and the meat was thick and looked very high quality.

The marbling looked great too, so I thought it would be delicious even before it hit the grill.

It was perfect for a Changwon Sangnam-dong meat restaurant and group dinners: it was charcoal-grilled, and the staff cooked all the meat for us, making it easy to eat. There was plenty of charcoal, and the heat looked seriously strong.
The side-dish spread
The banchan (Korean side dish) spread included myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic leaves), maybe stir-fried kimchi?, pink sausage, salad, seasoned scallions, green-onion kimchi, pickled onions, assorted sauces, galchi sokjeot (fermented hairtail fish sauce), and more, giving us so many ways to enjoy the meat.

This kimchi stew came with the meal, and it had so much volume and so many ingredients that I could not tell whether it was a complimentary dish or something we had actually ordered. Good.
Thick cuts grilled by the staff
Finally, the meat started grilling. They cooked it while explaining things to us, so we could comfortably chat with our baby. It made eating out really easy.

Since the cuts were thick, they naturally tasted better when cooked by a pro. The staff carefully turned them this way and that.

Once the large, thick pieces had cooked a bit, they cut them up and grilled them through so they were easy to eat. After cutting, the whole grill plate was full. It seemed like quite a generous portion.

As you would expect from a Changwon Sangnam-dong black pork-belly favorite, the meat looked different as it cooked. You could tell at a glance that it would be tender and savory.

Once the meat was mostly cooked, they told us the best way to eat it and placed the finished pieces on a stone plate. Our baby kept urging us to give them some quickly. It looked delicious to us, and apparently it looked delicious to the baby too.

We cut up the less fatty pork neck for the baby, and it must have been very tender because the baby ate it right away. We had not given the baby much pork belly or pork neck before, so I was relieved there was no hesitation.

Despite being so thick, the pork neck had a wonderfully savory, tender texture. The moment I tasted it, I thought, “Oh, this is delicious.” The five-layer pork belly was even more my style. Unlike regular pork belly, it comes with the skin attached, and its juicy flavor, chewy texture, and savoriness absolutely earned its place as great Changwon pork belly.

With side dishes this good, we had to try them with the delicious meat too. First, I made ssam (lettuce wraps) with various banchan. They cut through even the slightest richness and added umami, making for a wonderfully balanced bite.

What more is there to say about myeongi namul~! Five-layer pork belly with myeongi namul was simply unbeatable. The spread felt like it had been thoughtfully put together with many combinations in mind. The seasoned scallions, which seemed to use a special sauce, were sweet and tangy and great with the meat between bites. I liked that they were not overpowering.

I could not tell whether it was stir-fried kimchi or well-fermented sour kimchi, but it was a flavor no Korean could dislike. It was better than I expected. Please do try this one. The mushrooms and zucchini grilled nicely with the meat were also perfect for easing the guilt of eating something rich, haha.
A Sangnam-dong black pork restaurant I want to revisit
Maybe because of the move, I had been low on energy, and I was craving the five-layer pork belly and pork neck I had eaten in Jeju, so we visited Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch, a Changwon Sangnam-dong black pork favorite! First of all, I loved that there was a meat restaurant in Sangnam-dong where we could park so easily and eat comfortably. The cheerful owner and staff, along with the interior atmosphere, were lovely too. The flavor and portions of the pork belly and pork neck, as well as the neat side dishes, were satisfying beyond measure! When I am craving pork belly in Changwon Sangnam-dong, I will probably come back.
