Daegu chicken hot pot with kalguksu noodles: Golmok Naengmyeon 1966

In short

Golmok Naengmyeon 1966 Daegu is a naengmyeon (cold noodle) and dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) restaurant on Deuran-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. Three of us shared the seasonal dak hanmari for 2–3 people (34,000 won), which launched on September 17, then added extra kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and juk-bap (rice porridge) to the set's dumplings and noodles and finished every drop of broth. The broth at Golmok Naengmyeon 1966 — 20-ingredient seafood stock blended with chicken stock — is what makes the meal.

Hi everyone! Today I visited Golmok Naengmyeon, a Deuran-gil favorite! I had amazing naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) there last summer, and now that the weather's turning cool, I heard they'd launched dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot)~ I heard the news and rushed right over!!! Getting to eat dak hanmari, usually only found in Seoul, right here in Daegu made me so happy!! Let me introduce it to you now.

They have their own private parking lot~ and it looks like they launched dak hanmari as a seasonal menu on September 17.

Honestly, I'd never once eaten dak hanmari even on trips to Seoul!! I heard it's the dish foreigners always make sure to eat when they visit Seoul~ Since I love rich, hearty samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), I always assumed dak hanmari was just boiled chicken in plain broth, but after trying it at Golmok Naengmyeon I nearly fainted from how good it was...!!

Spacious second-floor hall seating at Golmok Naengmyeon 1966

Heading up to the second floor, there was this spacious seating area~ one window seat was free so we got seated there, and they also have a private room for groups, which was great~ haha

We were there for dak hanmari, so that's what we ordered!! There's a 2-3 person set and a 3-4 person set, but the owner said the 2-3 person set would be plenty for us, so we went with that!! Three of us for ₩34,000 — pretty great price, right??!! The naengmyeon you can eat as dessert after dak hanmari is just ₩6,000, so the pricing is great, and there are plenty of other options too — a side of potato pancake, kalguksu, and more~

Self-serve hot broth and free geotjeori (fresh kimchi) refills

Golmok Naengmyeon has a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to freshly made hot broth as much as you like, and side dishes are also refillable~ Just note that the kimchi at the self-serve bar is spicy, so if you want more of the geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) that comes as a default side, just ask and they'll bring more~ You dip the dak hanmari in a soy sauce dip, and if you stir in the accompanying spicy chili paste it gets nice and hearty — really good!!

The 10-minute timer and Daegu-style vegetable plate

The dak hanmari came out right after ordering — potatoes and chicken at the bottom, and they poured the broth over it, telling us to scoop out the vegetables and eat them first once they boiled~ There was also a cute little timer, set for 10 minutes, and they told us to eat the chicken once it went off!!

Apparently the dak hanmari you get in Seoul doesn't normally come with vegetables, but here they add them to suit Daegu tastes, haha. Personally, the bean sprouts, napa cabbage, mushrooms, and scallions I nibbled on while waiting for the chicken to cook were so delicious.

Seafood-and-chicken broth and the soy sauce dip

And then we scooped out the chicken right away — wow, it was seriously so good!! The soy sauce dip and the chili paste were the real kicker~ The chicken had zero fishy smell, was plump and tender, and the broth was truly a work of art...

When I later asked the owner, they said they mix a seafood stock made with 20 different ingredients together with chicken stock. That must be why the broth was so delicious — I get why foreigners go crazy for it.. haha

Dumplings, kalguksu noodles and juk-bap to finish the pot

Since we ordered the set, mandu (dumplings) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) came with it — once you finish the chicken, just ask and they'll add these in for you~

But honestly, the highlight of dak hanmari is this kalguksu!!! The noodles were soft and tender, so the broth soaked right into them. Seriously, even if you don't order the set, get the kalguksu when you have dak hanmari — please, don't skip it ㅠㅠ Ordering dak hanmari and not adding kalguksu to this broth should be a crime 😭

The broth was truly a masterpiece, so we added extra kalguksu noodles, and then with the leftover broth we added juk-bap (rice cooked in broth) too!!! It was seriously so good ㅠㅠㅠ We scraped the pot completely clean of broth before leaving~

A walk around Suseongmot Lake after dinner

It was seriously so delicious that I'm planning to bring my aunt who lives in Gyeongbuk here next time she comes to Daegu for baseball games, haha. I'm genuinely grateful and happy that we can eat dak hanmari right here in Daegu without going to Seoul!! This is officially our family's go-to spot for winter~ It's apparently a favorite of several baseball players too, and you really won't regret it — if you want dak kalguksu or dak hanmari, come to Golmok Naengmyeon on Deuran-gil!!

Fireworks on the last night of the Suseongmot Festival

Oh, and one more thing — Golmok Naengmyeon is close to Suseongmot (Suseong Lake), so it's great for a walk after eating~ We visited on the last night of the Suseongmot Festival and got to see this gorgeous fireworks show, haha.
