Lunch for four at a Gangneung abalone restaurant: Haenyeo Village

When you're traveling in Gangneung, raw fish or sundubu (soft tofu stew) are great, but sometimes for breakfast or lunch you want something hearty that isn't too spicy or heavy, right?

This time, the four of us were hunting for a good Gangneung lunch spot and ended up at Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village (강릉전복해녀마을), right in front of St. Johns Hotel.

They make the pressure-cooker abalone porridge to order, and it comes with a haenyeo (female diver) table packed with seafood — I thought this was just an abalone porridge place, but the spread genuinely surprised me!

Where is Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, and where do you park?

Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is located at 286-1 Haean-ro, Building B, 1st-2nd floor, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea. Park at the Solhyang Food Town lot nearby — up to 2 hours free.

It's not just near St. Johns Hotel, it's basically right across from it, and it's about a 10-minute walk from Shilla Monogram too.

Seamarq Hotel, Skybay Hotel, Chodang-dong, and Gyeongpodae/Gyeongpo Beach are all around 5 minutes by car, so it fits easily into a Gangmun Beach itinerary.

It's also drivable from Gangneung Jungang Market or Gangneung Station, so it works well as a Gangneung lunch stop after checking out of your hotel.

Open from 8am, closed Tuesdays

Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is open Wednesday through Monday, 08:00–15:30, with last order at 14:50, and closed every Tuesday.

Opening at 8am is great timing for anyone looking for Gangneung breakfast!

Since it runs from morning through late lunch, just check the closing time when planning your Gangneung lunch schedule.

First floor seating and the dog policy

The 1st floor of Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is done up cleanly in wood and white tones. Small dogs can come along in a carrier or stroller, though dogs over 15kg aren't allowed in.

With haenyeo photos and related decor scattered around, it felt more like a travel destination than a regular abalone porridge shop, and baby chairs were on hand too, so it looked good for family visits.

Worth noting if you're traveling around Gangmun Beach with your dog.

The second floor and its wide picture windows

Head up to the 2nd floor and the mood changes again. A huge picture window opens the view right up, and with the great natural light it felt a bit more like a café than a restaurant.

The space is roomy and tidy too, so it worked well as a Gangneung place to eat with parents or the whole family.

Tablet ordering and the self-serve side dish bar

Ordering through the tablet on the table was convenient, and if you needed more basic side dishes you could just grab them from the self-serve corner — no need to flag down staff, which was also nice.

We had a party of four and ordered 2 servings of pressure-cooker abalone porridge + 2 servings of abalone perilla seaweed soup.

For a party of four: split the abalone porridge and seaweed soup

Splitting the order half and half between four of us meant we got to try both of Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village's signature dishes.

I was debating just going with the abalone porridge, but they told us the abalone perilla seaweed soup is also a signature combo, so we ordered both.

Both the porridge and the seaweed soup came with the haenyeo table on the side, so it ended up far more filling than expected — good to know if you're bringing family or a group to a Gangneung lunch spot.

What comes on the haenyeo seafood table

The haenyeo table gets set before the main dish even arrives, and it's genuinely hearty-looking. It comes with seafood, boiled meat, and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) — 12-plus items in total — and the lineup can shift a bit depending on the day's ingredients and season.

It didn't feel like just eating abalone porridge — more like enjoying a whole table of the sea alongside it, which made the spread feel really good.

Pressure-cooker abalone porridge, cooked to order

The signature dish at Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is the pressure-cooker abalone porridge. Rather than scooping from a pre-made batch, they start cooking a fresh pot in the pressure cooker the moment your order comes in, and it's served pot and all.

They use fresh abalone rated 13-per-unit and don't use frozen abalone at all.

So it stays warm for a long time and has a deep abalone flavor — a good match for anyone looking for a gentle, easy-on-the-stomach first meal, like a Gangneung breakfast.

Nutty abalone perilla seaweed soup

The abalone perilla seaweed soup we ordered alongside had more presence than I expected. The perilla makes the broth nutty, and with abalone and seaweed together it's a hearty, filling dish.

Instead of everyone ordering the same abalone porridge, I'd recommend splitting it like we did — 2 servings each — so you can taste both.

Especially if you love a hot broth, it pairs really well with the abalone porridge.

Who will enjoy Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village?

I went in thinking I was just there for abalone porridge, but with the haenyeo table set alongside, the meal ended up far more generous than expected.

It's not too heavy for breakfast, but with the variety of seafood and side dishes you can pile on, it also holds up fine as lunch.

If you're looking for somewhere to eat near St. Johns Hotel or Shilla Monogram, or searching for a Seamarq Hotel restaurant and want a proper family meal, the location works well too.

Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, right in front of Gangmun Beach, where I got to eat abalone porridge, seaweed soup, and a full seafood table all in one sitting. It opens from 8am and parking is easy, so I'd especially recommend it as your first meal of the trip or a Gangneung lunch spot after checking out of your hotel.

It has options for a family trip with kids, a meal with your parents, or a spot that welcomes dogs too.
