Today I'm introducing Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, a great spot near Gangmun Beach for a filling breakfast. It's a place where you can enjoy pressure-cooker abalone porridge alongside a hearty haenyeo (female diver) table of over 12 dishes — here's my honest review of this Gangneung restaurant where you can really dig into abalone!

Where is Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village? Next to Gangmun Beach and the St. Johns Hotel
Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is near Gangmun Beach, right next to the Gangneung St. Johns Hotel, making it easy to fit into a Gangneung trip. It's a great spot to enjoy the ocean view before or after your meal, and the location works well for building a route with other nearby attractions.
Parking and interior: a large car park free for 2 hours, seating on two floors
There's a large parking lot in front of the restaurant. Parking is free for 2 hours, so I could take my time eating without worry.
The big sign and tall building exterior made it easy to spot from a distance. It operates on both the 1st and 2nd floors, and everything was kept very clean overall.
The high ceilings and spacious interior gave it an open feel with no sense of being cramped — comfortable yet upscale.
Arriving at opening time on a weekday: why booking abalone porridge ahead helps
I visited right at weekday opening time, so I could eat relatively at ease. As mealtime approached, more and more customers kept coming in. Since the abalone porridge is cooked to order in a pressure cooker, I'd recommend reserving ahead if you want to cut down the wait.

With plenty of tables, it's a great Gangmun Beach restaurant for family meals or group dining. There's also a separate private room for a quieter, more comfortable meal.
Baby chairs were available too, which made it look convenient for visiting with kids, and pets are apparently welcome as well. The restrooms were very clean too!

Everyone at the table has to order the same abalone porridge menu, and every main dish comes with the haenyeo table, so whatever you order, you get a hearty spread. There's also a review event for steamed whelk or a drink.
Pressure-cooker abalone porridge for two, 50,000 won: first look at the haenyeo table

Pressure-cooker abalone porridge for two (₩50,000) — at Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, even ordering just the abalone porridge gets you the haenyeo table, made up of more than 12 dishes ranging from abalone mulhoe to boiled pork, seafood, and grilled fish. The table was packed full the moment it arrived, which was satisfying from the very first look.

The abalone porridge: sesame oil aroma straight from the pressure cooker
The abalone porridge comes to the table in the actual pressure cooker, and the moment the lid comes off, a rich sesame oil aroma spreads out, whetting the appetite before you even take a bite. I was surprised by the size of the pot at first, but once I served myself, the portion turned out to be more generous than expected too.
It wasn't just a little abalone thrown in — there was plenty of abalone mixed throughout the rice, so I got to enjoy abalone in every spoonful. The flavor and aroma of the abalone was deeply infused into the porridge, giving it an overall rich, savory depth.

Maybe because it's cooked in a pressure cooker, the rice grains were incredibly soft — easy to chew and easy to swallow, which made it feel light enough even for breakfast.
The abalone flavor had soaked all the way through the rice, and even though I'm not usually a big porridge person, I kept going back for more of this abalone porridge that day.

What comes on the haenyeo table: cold boiled pork, grilled flounder, abalone mulhoe and seafood
The haenyeo table that came with the porridge featured a wide variety of seafood perfect for enjoying by the sea, which really made me feel like I was on a proper Gangneung trip.

Cold boiled pork — the meat had a soft, chewy texture that went well with the sauce, making it delicious.

Grilled flounder — crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and seasoned just right, it was delicious.

Abalone mulhoe — the tangy broth was loaded with shredded radish and topped with abalone, so I could enjoy the abalone's chewy texture as well. Taking a break to eat the cool mulhoe in between bites felt refreshing and cleansed the palate nicely.

Seafood — I got to enjoy a variety of fresh seafood including abalone, sea squirt, sea cucumber, scallops, and whelk, and it was fun sampling a little of everything.

Abalone comes generously in the porridge itself, but there's also a separate raw abalone dish and steamed abalone, so if you're an abalone lover, you'll be even more satisfied.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar: seasoned rice crab and herring roe
Seasoned rice crab and kimchi — the seasoned rice crab had a good chewy texture with a sweet-spicy sauce that was appealing, and even the basic side dishes here were good enough to go well with the abalone porridge. If you run out, you can help yourself more from the self-serve bar!
Herring roe — the salty, savory umami of the herring roe added to the soft, nutty abalone porridge, and this combination worked far better than I expected. Definitely try pairing the herring roe alongside it.
Final verdict on Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village
Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, a restaurant near Gangmun Beach, was a satisfying stop where I got to enjoy nutty abalone porridge cooked straight in the pressure cooker alongside a haenyeo table of over 12 varied dishes. From the abalone porridge loaded with abalone to mulhoe, seafood, boiled pork, and grilled fish, everything came out generously, making it a great place for a hearty breakfast.
If you're looking for a Gangneung restaurant to eat heartily near Gangmun Beach or the St. Johns Hotel, or a Gangmun Beach restaurant where you can enjoy abalone in many different ways, I'd recommend Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village!
