Looking for a hearty, easy-on-the-stomach meal near Gagyeong-dong in Cheongju? Today I visited Jeju Badang, a place famous for being the ultimate in neat, tidy Korean home-style cooking — perfect whether you're bringing your parents or your kids.

On days when I'm craving a warm bowl of rice with a nicely grilled piece of fish, this is the place that comes to mind without hesitation — I've lost count of how many times I've been back, that's how much I love it.

Is parking easy at Jeju Badang?

Jeju Badang has a spacious dedicated parking lot right at the entrance of its Seohyeonnam-ro location in Gagyeong-dong, so there's no need to worry about parking. Finding a spot is one of those things that quietly stresses people out when chasing down a good restaurant.

It's especially rough when you're traveling as a family and struggle to find parking before you even sit down to eat. But at Jeju Badang, the moment you pull in, the lot is wide and easy enough that even a new driver could park without any pressure — the spaces are generous and well laid out, so we parked comfortably without a single worry.

How comfortable is the dining room with kids?

The second-floor dining room at Jeju Badang has high ceilings and plenty of room, so family gatherings or group visits never feel cramped, and there's a separate kids' room too. Walking in, the clean, upscale interior is the first thing that greets you.

For parents with young children especially, the kids' room is welcome news — it's great to bring kids along. There's a proper dedicated space where kids can play safely without getting bored during the meal, which means the adults can relax and enjoy their food without feeling self-conscious — a real advantage.

How do the grilled mackerel and pot rice taste?

The menu I ordered that day at Jeju Badang was mackerel and pot rice. It was a perfect pairing of golden-brown grilled mackerel and savory pot rice.

It was genuinely delicious. We didn't wait long after ordering — the freshly cooked pot rice arrived along with a thick, generous piece of grilled mackerel, still steaming. The mackerel was crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside, splitting apart gently the moment my chopsticks touched it.

There was no fishy taste at all, and it was seasoned just salty enough — laid on top of a fresh, hot scoop of pot rice, it was the ultimate rice thief.

The savory aroma and chewy texture of the freshly cooked pot rice lifted the flavor of the grilled fish even further. After scooping the rice out into a bowl, they pour hot water into the pot, and finishing the meal off with savory scorched-rice tea and crispy rice at the end always settles the stomach comfortably.

The seaweed soup that came alongside rounded out a perfect meal. A spread like this is more than enough to hit the mark for anyone looking for clean, tidy Korean food in Gagyeong-dong.

What's on the self-serve side bar?

One of Jeju Badang's real charms is its buffet-style self-serve bar. Beyond the basic side dishes, you can help yourself to all kinds of namul (seasoned vegetables), japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), kimchi and warm side dishes throughout the meal, no need to be shy about it.

None of it is over-seasoned — each dish lets the natural flavor of the ingredients shine, showing off a textbook example of a neatly laid Korean table in Gagyeong-dong. The side dishes alone are good enough quality to polish off a bowl of rice in no time.

Best of all, there was fried chicken too, and gangjeong (Korean sweet rice snacks) for a bit of dessert as well.

Finishing with plum tea and scorched-rice tea

Before leaving Jeju Badang after your meal, be sure to stop by the plum tea dessert station. It was great to have plum tea on hand to cut through any greasiness.

After filling up on grilled fish, pot rice, and all the side dishes, a cool, tangy-sweet glass of plum tea cleaned my palate right up and felt like it helped digestion too.

You could really feel the owner's thoughtfulness, right down to the guests' final dessert. Overall, this is a place where everything lines up perfectly — a clean dining environment, spacious and comfortable parking, a kids' room, and above all, impeccably neat flavors.
